RESUMO

The learnship of Orthography has been of a central concern in the process of literacy. Traditionally, it is has been considered a good writing the one orthographically correct. Therefore, emphasis has been given to practices aiming the memorization and automatization of the correct writing of words. Nowadays, errors have been taken as part of the learnship, process of writing revealing ideas or hypothesis constructed by children when dealing with words. In spite of this vision, there is still a very strong tendency to see the errors as a disturbance signal. Considering how it is educationally very important to comprehend deeply the means of appropriation of the orthographic system, and what the errors produced by children can mean, this research intends to characterize the progressive mastering of Orthograpy throughout the four first series of primary school. From the writing production of 541 children, we could classify the orthographical errors; analyse the most commom errors and verify the evolution of errors in each series. It was possible to conclude that all the children produce errors. Such occurance tends to diminish along the learnship process indicating a progressive appropriation of the orthographic system. It was noticed that the writing presents many orthographical proprieties, some of them more complex than others, which may lead to a high incidence of errors. Most of the errors detected come from difficulties inherent of the learnship process, occurring with the majority of the children. However, some systematic alterations, pertaining specifically to a few children, may be indicative of learning problems centered in the child itself, which require more careful evolutionary analyses
