2. Importance of cerebrospinal fluid investigation during dengue infection in Brazilian Amazonia Region
BACKGROUND Amazon, the largest tropical forest of the world, has suffered from dengue outbreaks since 1998. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients, from Amazonas state, suspected of central nervous system (CNS) viral infection was studied using molecular and immunological methods. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the importance of CSF investigation in patients with acut

3. Genetic ancestry of patients with porphyria cutanea tarda in a country with mixed races: a cross-sectional study (Rio de Janeiro - Brazil)
Abstract: Porphyria cutanea tarda has a complex etiology with genetic factors not completely elucidated. The miscegenation of the Brazilian population has important implications in the predisposition to diseases. There are no studies concerning the genetic ancestry of patients with porphyria cutanea tarda from a mixed population. Thirty patients living in Ri

4. Human leukocyte antigen allele linkage disequilibrium and haplotype structure in volunteer bone marrow donors of Paraná State
Abstract Background Bone marrow transplantation has been used in the treatment of various diseases, especially hematologic diseases. The success of this treatment, among other factors, requires human leukocyte antigens (HLA) compatibility between patient and donor. Knowing the human leukocyte antigens allele group and haplotype frequencies as well as the li

5. Management of the palm Astrocaryum chambira Burret (Arecaceae) in northwest Amazon
We studied the management of the fiber-producing chambira palm Astrocaryum chambira by indigenous people in the Colombian Amazon. Between 2009 and 2012, we visited four communities and two marketing centers, where we interviewed 12 people. In addition, we specifically observed A. chambira harvesting, processing, and commercialization; studied palm population

6. G6PD deficiency in Latin America: systematic review on prevalence and variants
Plasmodium vivax radical cure requires the use of primaquine (PQ), a drug that induces haemolysis in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficient (G6PDd) individuals, which further hampers malaria control efforts. The aim of this work was to study the G6PDd prevalence and variants in Latin America (LA) and the Caribbean region. A systematic search of the pub

7. MHC Class II haplotypes of Colombian Amerindian tribes
We analyzed 1041 individuals belonging to 17 Amerindian tribes of Colombia, Chimila, Bari and Tunebo (Chibcha linguistic family), Embera, Waunana (Choco linguistic family), Puinave and Nukak (Maku-Puinave linguistic families), Cubeo, Guanano, Tucano, Desano and Piratapuyo (Tukano linguistic family), Guahibo and Guayabero (Guayabero Linguistic Family), Currip

8. Association of serum lipid components and obesity with genetic ancestry in an admixed population of elderly women
The prevalence of metabolic disorders varies among ethnic populations and these disorders represent a critical health care issue for elderly women. This study investigated the correlation between genetic ancestry and body composition, metabolic traits and clinical status in a sample of elderly women. Clinical, nutritional and anthropometric data were collect

9. Populações ameríndias da América do Sul: estudo multi-locus e inferência histórico-demográfica e seletiva / Native populations in South American: a multi-locus study of demographic and selective history

10. Genética de populações em genes de função imunológica: um estudo em populações Ameríndias / Population genetics of immune function genes: a study of Amerindian populations

11. Haplotype diversity of 17 Y-str loci in an admixed population from the Brazilian Amazon
The allelic and haplotype frequencies of 17 Y-STR loci most commonly used in forensic testing were estimated in a sample of 138 unrelated healthy males from Macapá, in the northern Amazon region of Brazil. The average gene diversity was 0.6554 ± 0.3315. 134 haplotypes of the 17 loci were observed, 130 of them unique and four present in two individuals each

12. Population analysis of vitamin D receptor polymorphisms and the role of genetic ancestry in an admixed population
The vitamin D receptor (VDR) is an essential protein related to bone metabolism. Some VDR alleles are differentially distributed among ethnic populations and display variable patterns of linkage disequilibrium (LD). In this study, 200 unrelated Brazilians were genotyped using 21 VDR single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and 28 ancestry informative markers.
