Health work is one of the possible outlines to be considered in the world of work and it presents different ways to be perceived and understood as locus operandi of the health professional. It also describes experiences of idleness according to nurses point of view; to identify experiences about nurses work quotidian noted as cause of suffering; and to analyze the relation between work, idleness and health for the investigated subjects. The study undertook a qualitative approach of the ethnographical kind, which had as analysis technique the Discourse of the Collective Subject by Lefèvre. The basis theories were the humanistic idleness by Manuel Cuenca Cabeza and the psychodynamics of work by Crhistofhe Dejours. Thus, the meanings conferred on the nurses work are intrinsically related to the social reality built and reproduced, and with different personal and cultural variables of the moment lived. They are equally influenced by organization and work condition imposed on health services. The situations noted as the most referred suffering generating were: long work hours, overload, overnight work, feeling of impotence in face of situations of patients loss, work pressure, the relation with co-workers, patients and/or relatives. The meaning of idleness, as source of pleasure and welfare, is reported by nurses when they notice the necessity of some time for themselves, a personal time, out of any work obligation . Key-words: Health work; Idleness and health; Workers health
