RESUMO

This monograph concerns the history of teaching Latin in the curriculum of fundamental schooling witnessed in the Maria de Constanza Barros Machado State School, based on the research field of the History of Schooling disciplines. The body of the research is constituted from the kinds of sources: referential documents belong to the school archive, school manuals adopted during the first years of the schools functioning and the testimonies of ex-professors and alumni. Analysis of sources showed that Latin began to be one of the disciplines indicted in the curriculum of the primary course implanted in the institution in 1943, as a result of Law-Decree 424442 and, from then on till 1961 was regularly offered until 1961 when, by the Basic Law 4024, the discipline ceased being obligatory. The contents and methodology proposed in the manuals adopted indicate that the general objective of Latin teaching consisted in apportioning to students, through the study of traditional texts and the Latin language, a cultural formation permitting the interaction with elders as well as contemporaries. For ex-alumini and professors, the study of Latin was an instrument for the comprehension of Portuguese grammar, inverting, in a certain manner, the tradition of Portuguese as a path to the learning of Latin grammar. Transformations in Latin teaching in primary schools reflected the lack of qualified professors, transformations occurred in the teaching of the discipline over Brazil because of educational legislation as well as labor conditions in the area, representing in their turn changes occurred in society.
