RESUMO
The hyperthyroidism of Gravesâ disease, the most common form of hyperthyroidism, is caused by autoantibodies that activate the TSH receptor. It is associated with an increase in cardiovascular mortality and hip fractures in elderly females. The treatment options currently available are the antithyroid drugs, surgery and radioiodine, none of which is considered ideal as they do not act directly on the etiopathology of the disease. Radioiodine has been increasingly used as the treatment of choice as it is a safe, definitive therapy and easy to administer. The use of calculated doses brings no benefit in comparison with fixed doses. Some authors prefer to administer higher doses in order to deliberately induce hyperthyroidism and others lower doses with a lower incidence of hypothyroidism and a greater incidence of euthyroidism. There is no consensus as to the optimum regimen of fixed doses, which is the main focus of the present paper. A retrospective assessment, was made of the patients with Gravesâ disease hyperthyroidism seen at the Department of Endocrinology of the Federal University of Pernambuco Hospital submitted to radioiodine at doses of 10 to 15 mCi in the hospitalâs Nuclear Medicine Center from January 2000 to December 2002. Thyroid function and the association bituim age, gender, place of residence and previous use of anti-thyroid drugs were analyzed six, 12 and 24 months after the radioiodine treatment. The final results were expressed as the mean of the values obtained, when a comparison was made between. Of the 164 patients analyzed, 61 (37.2%) were submitted to 10 mCi and 103 (62.8%) to 15 mCi. In the longitudinal analysis it was observed that remission of the hyperthyroidism was statistically different in the sixth month (p <0.001), being greater in the group in which the dose of 15 mCi was used, but similar in the two groups at 12 and 24 months. It may be concluded that the administered fixed doses of 10 and 15 mCi brought about a similar remission of the hyperthyroidism after 12 months of treatment
