15. Susceptibility of zygomycetes to amphotericin B, miconazole, and ketoconazole.
Susceptibility to amphotericin B, miconazole, and ketoconazole was determined for 25 clinical isolates of zygomycetes in yeast nitrogen base broth and human serum. In yeast nitrogen base broth, 7 of 25 isolates were susceptible to an imidazole or amphotericin B. In serum, all were resistant to the imidazoles and inhibited by amphotericin B, the current drug

16. Zygospores: the last word in identification of rare or atypical zygomycetes isolated from clinical specimens.
Three zygomycetes (order Mucorales), isolated from clinical specimens, whose generic or species identification were uncertain, were definitively identified on the basis of the production of zygospores resulting from mating studies. These three isolates were identified as Mucor circinelloides f. circinelloides, Rhizomucor pusillus, and Absidia corymbifera. Th

17. Presence of polyphosphate of low molecular weight in zygomycetes.
Polyphosphate of average chain length corresponding to 10 phosphate units was detected in the mycelial extract of zygomycetes. Gel electrophoresis techniques commonly used for the separation and characterization of acidic mucopolysaccharides were successfully used for the detection, purification, and characterization of the polyphosphate.

18. In Vitro Susceptibilities of Zygomycetes to Combinations of Antimicrobial Agents
Combinations of antimicrobial agents were tested against 35 strains of zygomycetes. The interaction between amphotericin B and rifampin was synergistic or additive. Flucytosine alone was inactive and, upon combination with amphotericin B, synergy was not achieved. The combination of amphotericin B with terbinafine was synergistic for 20% of strains, and the

19. In Vitro Activities of Posaconazole, Itraconazole, Voriconazole, Amphotericin B, and Fluconazole against 37 Clinical Isolates of Zygomycetes
In vitro antifungal susceptibility testing results of a new antifungal triazole, posaconazole (POS), were compared to results with amphotericin B (AMB), itraconazole (ITC), voriconazole (VRC), and fluconazole (FLC) against clinical agents of zygomycosis. The MICs of POS at which 50% and 90% of the isolates were inhibited were 0.25 and 4 μg/ml, respectively.

20. Phylogeny and PCR Identification of Clinically Important Zygomycetes Based on Nuclear Ribosomal-DNA Sequence Data
A molecular database for all clinically important Zygomycetes was constructed from nucleotide sequences from the nuclear small-subunit (18S) ribosomal DNA and domains D1 and D2 of the nuclear large-subunit (28S) ribosomal DNA. Parsimony analysis of the aligned 18S and 28S DNA sequences was used to investigate phylogenetic relationships among 42 isolates repr

Storck, Roger (The University of Texas, Austin). Nucleotide composition of nucleic acids from fungi. II. Deoxyribonucleic acids. J. Bacteriol. 91:227–230. 1966.—The nucleotide composition of the deoxyribonucleic acids (DNA) present in extracts of 30 species of fungi was determined. The results were analyzed, together with those in the literature. It was

22. Comparative mitochondrial genomics in zygomycetes: bacteria-like RNase P RNAs, mobile elements and a close source of the group I intron invasion in angiosperms
To generate data for comparative analyses of zygomycete mitochondrial gene expression, we sequenced mtDNAs of three distantly related zygomycetes, Rhizopus oryzae, Mortierella verticillata and Smittium culisetae. They all contain the standard fungal mitochondrial gene set, plus rnpB, the gene encoding the RNA subunit of the mitochondrial RNase P (mtP-RNA) an

24. Activity of Posaconazole in Treatment of Experimental Disseminated Zygomycosis
Three isolates of zygomycetes were used to produce a disseminated infection in nonimmunocompromised mice. Against all zygomycete strains, amphotericin B significantly prolonged survival. Itraconazole was inactive against Rhizopus microsporus and Rhizopus oryzae but was partially active against Absidia corymbifera. Posaconazole had no beneficial effects again
