1. Effect of Weathering and Accelerated Photoaging on PET/PC (80/20 wt/wt%) Melt Extruded Blend
In this study we investigated the natural weathering of a catalyzed blend of poly(ethylene terephthalate)/polycarbonate PET/PC (80/20wt/wt%). The results were compared to the accelerated photoaging tests. The specimens were characterized by wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), optical microscopy (OM), thermogravimetry (TG/DTG), medium infrared spectroscopy (

2. Nitriding of AISI 1020 steel: comparison between conventional nitriding and nitriding with cathodic cage
Cylindrical samples of AISI 1020 steel were nitrided, using the techniques of conventional plasma nitriding and cathodic cage. In the latter, the samples are kept at floating potential, inside of a cage that works as a cathode and to shield the samples from the cathodic potential. A systematic study was conducted in order to evaluate the efficiency of this t

In this study it was studied the physical-mechanical properties of elastomers based on styrenebutadiene rubber (SBR) with the addition of barite, for application of these compounds in protecting in the shielding against radiation X, for the substitution of aprons form based on elastomer fillered with lead in ergonomic and economically advantageous conditions

5. Isótopos de carbono em filitos carbonosos da sequência metavulcano-sedimentar Marmeleiro, Sul de Ibaré, Rio Grande do Sul
Carbon isotope ratios for carbonaceous material in the graphite prospect of Marmeleiro Sequence, southwestern of the Sul-rio-grandense Shield, have been determined. The results are approximately constant with d13C-values between -27 and -24 per mil. These values suggest that the studied carbonaceous rocks were formed from syngenetic organic detritus, which w

6. Desenvolvimento de bloco de vedação com barita na composição de partida para blindagem de radiação X
This work main objective is to study the use of bricks in barium X-rays rooms in order to contribute to the optimization of shielding rooms diagnosis. The work was based on experimental measurements of X-ray attenuation (40 to 150 kV), using ceramic seal bearing the incorporation of barium sulfat (BaSO4). Different formulations were studied in three differen

7. Minerals Associated with Biofilms Occurring on Exposed Rock in a Granitic Underground Research Laboratory
The concept of disposal of nuclear fuel waste in crystalline rock requires the effects of microbial action to be investigated. The Underground Research Laboratory excavated in a pluton of the Canadian Shield provides a unique opportunity to study these effects. Three biofilms kept moist by seepage through fractures in granitic rock faces of the Underground R

8. Crystal Structure of Iodotyrosine Deiodinase, a Novel Flavoprotein Responsible for Iodide Salvage in Thyroid Glands*
The flavoprotein iodotyrosine deiodinase (IYD) salvages iodide from mono- and diiodotyrosine formed during the biosynthesis of the thyroid hormone thyroxine. Expression of a soluble domain of this membrane-bound enzyme provided sufficient material for crystallization and characterization by x-ray diffraction. The structures of IYD and two co-crystals contain

9. Structural stability in the 4-zinc human insulin hexamer.
X-ray studies on human insulins prepared by semisynthetic and biosynthetic methods have recently been undertaken. Human insulin differs from porcine insulin only at the COOH terminus of the B-chain. The present study reports the crystal structure of 4-zinc human insulin, which is used clinically as a slow-acting preparation. The structure has been refined, u
