13. Genome sequence of the H2-producing Clostridium beijerinckii strain Br21 isolated from a sugarcane vinasse treatment plant
Abstract We report on the nearly complete genome sequence of Clostridium beijerinckii strain Br21, formerly isolated from a sugarcarne vinasse wastewater treatment plant. The resulting genome is ca. 5.9 Mbp in length and resembles the size of previously published C. beijerinckii genomes. We annotated the genome sequence and predicted a total of 5323 genes. S

14. Feasibility of biohydrogen production by co-digestion of vinasse (sugarcane stillage) and molasses in an AnSBBR
Abstract This work studied the feasibility of biohydrogen production by co-digestion of vinasse/molasses in an AnSBBR operated with mechanical stirring (30°C and 200 rpm). Hydrogen production by co-digestion of vinasse/sucrose was also studied to verify the performance of the process with a known co-substrate with easy degradation. The effects of influent c

15. Potassium adsorption in soil cultivated with sugarcane
ABSTRACT Vinasse is a byproduct of the process of distillation of sugarcane juice for the manufacture of sugar and alcohol. Because it is rich in nutrients, mainly potassium (K), is used as fertilizer and applied via fertigation, without concerning for the fate of this compound in the soil. Thus, the objective of the study was to evaluate the interactions of

16. AnSBBR applied to biomethane production for vinasse treatment: effects of organic loading, feed strategy and temperature
Abstract This study assessed the feasibility of an anaerobic sequencing batch and fed-batch biofilm reactor (AnSBBR) with mechanical stirring for vinasse treatment and biomethane production. The amount of liquid medium used was 3 L, and the treated volume was 1 L per cycle. The cycle time was 8 h, with feeding times of 10 min (batch mode) and 240 min (fed-ba

17. COMBINED TREATMENT OF VINASSE BY AN UPFLOW ANAEROBIC FILTER-REACTOR AND OZONATION PROCESS
Abstract The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of treating vinasse using anaerobic digestion (AD) followed by ozonation. The AD process was performed using a laboratory-scale upflow anaerobic filter reactor (UAFR) under continuous operation at 29 ± 1 °C. Stable conditions were reached at 10 kgCOD m-3 d-1 and a hydraulic retention time (

18. Ethanol production in Brazil: a bridge between science and industry
ABSTRACT In the last 40 years, several scientific and technological advances in microbiology of the fermentation have greatly contributed to evolution of the ethanol industry in Brazil. These contributions have increased our view and comprehension about fermentations in the first and, more recently, second-generation ethanol. Nowadays, new technologies are a

19. Biomethane production from vinasse in upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactors inoculated with granular sludge
ABSTRACT The main objective of this study was to evaluate the anaerobic conversion of vinasse into biomethane with gradual increase in organic loading rate (OLR) in two upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors, R1 and R2, with volumes of 40.5 and 21.5 L in the mesophilic temperature range. The UASB reactors were operated for 230 days with a hydraulic

20. ASSESSMENT OF OZONE AS A PRETREATMENT TO IMPROVE ANAEROBIC DIGESTION OF VINASSE
Abstract This paper presents an assessment of ozone oxidative effects on the biodegradability of sugar cane vinasse, aiming at increasing the methane yield by anaerobic digestion of this effluent. Furthermore, as a new approach, an economic balance of this process was made. Using a bench scale reactor, ozone was applied at 60, 120, 180, 240 mgO3.gCOD-1 doses

21. TRATAMENTO DA VINHAÇA POR ADSORÇÃO EM CARVÃO DE BAGAÇO DE CANA-DE-AÇÚCAR
The aim of this study was to develop an effective and economically viable technology for the treatment of vinasse, prior to its disposal in the soil for fertirrigation, aiming this way at reducing the environmental impacts generated by inadequately discarding this effluent. The primary treatment of vinasse by adsorption was evaluated. Adsorbents were prepare

22. INFLUENCE OF SOLID MOISTURE AND BED HEIGHT ON CULTIVATION OF Aspergillus niger FROM SUGARCANE BAGASSE WITH VINASSE
AbstractSolid-state cultivation (SSC) may be defined as growth of microorganisms on a solid support impregnated or not with a nutrient solution in near absence of free-water conditions. The use of sugarcane bagasse as a support for SSC usually demands that the particles are impregnated and moistened with nutrient solution. Vinasse is the main wastewater of e

23. Spatial variability of soil potassium in sugarcane areas subjected to the application of vinasse

24. Growth of microalgae Scenedesmus sp in ethanol vinasse
This study evaluated the feasibility of using vinasse as a nutrient source for microalgae cultivation. The Scenedesmus sp was grown in a medium supplemented with vinasse and process variables were optimized using a factorial design and a Central Composite Design (CCD). The factorial design results showed that it was possible to cultivate microalgae at concen
