1. THE SUCCESS OF THE BRAZILIAN ALCOHOL PROGRAM (PROÁLCOOL) - A DECADE-BY-DECADE BRIEF HISTORY OF ETHANOL IN BRAZIL
ABSTRACT The National Alcohol Program (Proálcool) was a strategic policy of the Brazilian government to replace petroleum-based fuels with alcohol (ethanol). Based on the review, we can choose the 1960s as a start point for a leap in development. Over the 500 years of sugarcane history in Brazil, the crop enters the second decade of the 21st century with ex

2. New Proposal for Sugarcane Vinasse Treatment by Hydrothermal Carbonization: An Evaluation of Solid and Liquid Products
Vinasse is a residue of ethanol production from sugarcane. In view of the problems associated with its disposal, this study aimed to propose a treatment for vinasse by hydrothermal carbonization. The influence of temperature (100 to 200 ºC), acidity (1.7 to 8.3%) and reaction time (12 to 48 h) on the hydrothermal treatment was evaluated, as well the charact

3. DISPONIBILIDADE DE NUTRIENTES E CARBONO ORGÂNICO EM SOLOS CONTENDO CARVÃO HIDROTÉRMICO LAVADO E NÃO LAVADO E COMPARAÇÃO COM SOLOS ANTROPOGÊNICOS
Hydrochar washed (1.0, 2.5, 5.0 and 10.0 %) and not washed (10.0%) produced by hydrothermal carbonization using vinasse and sugarcane bagasse was applied in sand, ultisol and oxisol columns, and the release of NO3-, Orthophosphate, SO42-, Total Organic Carbon (TOC), H+ were evaluated for 30 days. These results were compared with the release of these paramete

4. Effect of previous soil management on sugarcane response to nitrogen fertilization
ABSTRACT: N Fertilizer recommendations must be improved to optimize N use efficiency (NUE) for bioenergy crops. A study was conducted to test the hypothesis that sites varying in historical usage of by-product differ in soil N-supplying power and sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) responsiveness to N fertilization. Our aim was to quantify soil N availability and N f

5. Genome sequence of the H2-producing Clostridium beijerinckii strain Br21 isolated from a sugarcane vinasse treatment plant
Abstract We report on the nearly complete genome sequence of Clostridium beijerinckii strain Br21, formerly isolated from a sugarcarne vinasse wastewater treatment plant. The resulting genome is ca. 5.9 Mbp in length and resembles the size of previously published C. beijerinckii genomes. We annotated the genome sequence and predicted a total of 5323 genes. S

6. Ethanol production in Brazil: a bridge between science and industry
ABSTRACT In the last 40 years, several scientific and technological advances in microbiology of the fermentation have greatly contributed to evolution of the ethanol industry in Brazil. These contributions have increased our view and comprehension about fermentations in the first and, more recently, second-generation ethanol. Nowadays, new technologies are a

7. INFLUENCE OF SOLID MOISTURE AND BED HEIGHT ON CULTIVATION OF Aspergillus niger FROM SUGARCANE BAGASSE WITH VINASSE
AbstractSolid-state cultivation (SSC) may be defined as growth of microorganisms on a solid support impregnated or not with a nutrient solution in near absence of free-water conditions. The use of sugarcane bagasse as a support for SSC usually demands that the particles are impregnated and moistened with nutrient solution. Vinasse is the main wastewater of e

8. Physico-chemical and sensorial evaluation of sugarcane spirits produced using distillation residue
The objective of the present study was to analyze the use of vinasse from cachaça as an ingredient of the fermentation medium for the spirit production. The fermentations were conducted out in three successive batches using a Saccharomyces cerevisiae isolate. In the first batch, the sugarcane broth was only diluted with distilled water. In the second and th

9. Vinhaça concentrada de cana-de-açúcar: monitoramento das propriedades químicas do solo e mineralização líquida de nitrogênio / Concentrated vinasse from sugarcane: monitoring of soil chemical properties and net nitrogen mineralization
Porém, devido a gran

11. Avaliação das tecnologias de disposição de vinhaça de cana de açúcar quanto ao aspecto de desenvolvimento ambiental e econômico / Evaluation of technologies for the disposal of sugarcane vinasse in terms of environmental and economic development

This paper reports on a modification of the procedures originally described in the French Pharmacopoeia for the UV-visible spectrometric analysis of flavonoids, and proposes a validation of the method and its application in the determination of total flavonoids from sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) leaves and vinasse. An analysis of precision and accuracy r
