Mammalian cells contain several proteolytic systems to carry out the degradative processes and complex regulatory mechanisms to prevent excessive protein breakdown. Among these systems, the Ca2+-activated proteolytic system involves the cysteine proteases denoted calpains, and their inhibitor, calpastatin.
