Based on an investigation about the institutional aspects of the process of social change associated with the democratic transition in Spain, and of the motivational contexts of the participation of teachers in the current educational process, the present article seeks to outline, from the point of view of sociology, the historical path of the educational system in Spain since the beginnings of public school, in order to understand the evolution of the cultural, ideological, methodological and curriculum models, as well as its relation to the changes in educational policies.
