Conversion of sandy tailing from banded iron formation exploitation into glass-ceramic materials

Glass-ceramic materials made of 40.0 wt. (%) of sandy tailing from banded iron formation exploitation and 60 wt. (%) of slag from steelwork were analyzed. Vitrification was obtained by heating the batch samples up to 1400 °C for 1 hour and quenching the melt on a stainless steel plate. Devitrification was obtained by heat-treating the as-quenched glass samples in isothermal conditions at 750 and 1000 °C for 2 hours. FTIR spectroscopy analysis on the devitrified samples indicates a peak shift towards higher wave number with respect to the as-quenched glass because of the crystallization. XRD ...
