13. Agroindustry Residues as a Source for Cellulose Nanofibers Production
Our study was motivated by the large amount of crop residues produced in Brazil, which represent underutilized waste biomass and a serious threat to the environment because of the landfilling. For example, even though the corn crop is not popular in Brazil, it is produced in the area of around 18-20 million hectares with an average production of 5-6 t ha-1.

14. Sugar derived from genetically modified sugarcane
Abstract Sugar is an ancient food and currently one of the most used ingredients in human nutrition and in the food industry. In tropical regions, sugar is produced mainly from sugarcane, while temperate countries produce sugar preferably from sugar beets. Due to its widespread use, the forthcoming adoption of genetically modified (GM) sugarcane varieties ma

15. Characterization of sugarcane bagasse ash (SBA) and its evaluation for use in alkali-activated slag mixtures
Abstract This work proposed to incorporate the sugarcane bagasse ash (SBA) with a high content of organic matter (loss on ignition of 35.87%) in alkali-activated mixtures with blast furnace slag. After grinding SBA, replacement ratios of 10%, 20%, and 30% of the ground ash were used for the flowability evaluation. The mixtures containing 20% and 30% showed a

16. Multivariate Optimization of Extraction Variables of PAH in Particulate Matter (PM10) in Indoor/Outdoor Air at Campos dos Goytacazes, Brazil
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are products of incomplete combustion of biomass and fossil fuels, that are produced on a larger scale by anthropogenic sources. Burning sugarcane plantations can be a source of atmospheric PAH in regions where this culture predominates. Campos dos Goytacazes, Brazil, is surrounded by sugarcane crops that still use fire

17. SUGARCANE BASE CUTTING QUALITY USING RECTANGULAR AND CIRCULAR BLADES
ABSTRACT Sugarcane mechanized harvesting can lead to serious risks to the longevity of plantations when improperly operated, and may cause damages and disturbances in the remaining ratoons in the field. In this sense, this study aimed to evaluate the damage and disturbance to the sugarcane ratoons by the base cutting quality of two-blade models through stati

18. Estimated productivity of sugarcane through the Agro-Ecological Zone method
ABSTRACT The estimate of the potential sugarcane productivity through agroclimatic models aids in the agricultural planning of the crops and the quantification of the yield for a given region. For these estimated values to be considered robust there is a need for validating the performance of such models in different areas and agricultural varieties. Hence,

19. USE OF RESIDUES FROM THE CELLULOSE INDUSTRY AND SUGARCANE BAGASSE IN PARTICLEBOARDS
ABSTRACT The use of alternative materials such as lignocellulosic residues in the production of particleboards has increased considering that these residues are produced in large volumes and often do not have an appropriate destination. This research studied the use of residues from cellulose industries, sugarcane bagasse, and castor oil-based polyurethane r

20. Isotopic Analysis of Sugarcane/Petroleum Polyethylene Blends: A Perspective on the Application of Stable Isotope Method (δ13C)
In the present work, we propose the application of stable isotope analysis (δ13C) as an auxiliary tool for the inspection of sugarcane/petroleum polyethylene blends. Our results are supported from the analysis of selected samples by accelerator mass spectrometry (14C-AMS). From the results, it was concluded that the δ13C method is suitable to discriminate

21. Identification of Two Additional Behaviorally Active Gland Constituents of Female Diatraea saccharalis (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae)
The sugarcane borer, Diatraea saccharalis (Fabricius), is the major pest insect attacking sugarcane crops in Brazil. Population control by insecticide treatment is not efficient due to simultaneous presence of all developmental stages of the insect throughout the year, and alternative control methods are needed. Two female-produced sex pheromone components,

22. Straw management effects on sugarcane growth, nutrient cycling and water use in the Brazilian semiarid region
ABSTRACT It was evaluated how straw management modifies the development, growth, nutrient cycling and crop water productivity of sugarcane in the semiarid region of Brazil. The experiment was carried out using two plots with 5 ha each, being one without straw on the soil surface and one with 26 Mg·ha-1 covering the soil. Sugarcane growth and development and

23. SOIL CHEMICAL CHANGES AND RESEMBLANCES IN A CHRONOSEQUENCE RAINFOREST-SUGARCANE-PASTURELAND IN THE ATLANTIC FOREST BIOME
ABSTRACT This study evaluated soil chemical and isotopic changes in soils of a chronosequence rainforest-sugarcane-pasture in the Atlantic Forest biome, Brazil. Soil samples were collected (0-20 cm) in areas of native Brazilian Atlantic rainforest, sugarcane plantation and pastures of Brachiaria decumbens. The soil analyses performed were: pH (water 1:2.5),

24. TOWARDS BRAZIL AND CHINA CROSS-CULTURAL UNDERSTANDING AND TRANSNATIONAL COOPERATION
ABSTRACT Oxisols are important soils that have been converted from native vegetation to croplands, and can affect soil biological properties such as microbial biomass and enzyme activity. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the changes on soil microbial biomass and enzyme activity when native vegetation (NV) was converted to cropland (CL), such as ma
