1. Draft genome of Thermomonospora sp. CIT 1 (Thermomonosporaceae) and in silico evidence of its functional role in filter cake biomass deconstruction
Abstract The filter cake from sugar cane processing is rich in organic matter and nutrients, which favors the proliferation of microorganisms with potential to deconstruct plant biomass. From the metagenomic data of this material, we assembled a draft genome that was phylogenetically related to Thermomonospora curvata DSM 43183, which shows the functional an

2. Chemical inhibition of the contaminant Lactobacillus fermentum from distilleries producing fuel bioethanol
The purpose of this study was to determine the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of pure or mixed chemicals for Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Lactobacillus fermentum in the samples isolated from distilleries with serious bacterial contamination problems. The biocides, which showed the best results were: 3,4,4' trichlorocarbanilide (TCC), tested at pH 4.0

3. Evaluation of stress tolerance and fermentative behavior of indigenous Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Sixty six indigenous Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains were evaluated in stressful conditions (temperature, osmolarity, sulphite and ethanol tolerance) and also ability to flocculate. Eighteen strains showed tolerant characteristics to these stressful conditions, growing at 42 ºC, in 0.04% sulphite, 1 mol L-1 NaCl and 12% ethanol. No flocculent characteristi

4. Bioethanol production from rice straw residues
A rice straw -cellulose utilizing mold was isolated from rotted rice straw residues. The efficient rice straw degrading microorganism was identified as Trichoderma reesei. The results showed that different carbon sources in liquid culture such as rice straw, carboxymethyl cellulose, filter paper, sugar cane bagasse, cotton stalk and banana stalk induced T. r

5. Desenvolvimento e produção de cana-de-açúcar em sistema sob palhada
Due to environmental constraints, lack of manpower and the search for better efficiency, the harvesting of sugar cane tends to be mechanized, causing large amount of straw is available in this new system. There are benefits to soil and culture provided by this residue. However, it was discussed what amount would be sufficient to promote these benefits and wh

6. Ethanol fermentation of sugarcane molasses by Zymomonas mobilis MTCC 92 immobilized in Luffa cylindrica L. sponge discs and Ca-alginate matrices
Bio-ethanol production from cane molasses (diluted to 15 % sugar w/v) was studied using the bacterium, Zymomonas mobilis MTCC 92 entrapped in luffa (Luffa cylindrica L.) sponge discs and Ca-alginate gel beads as the immobilizing matrices. At the end of 96 h fermentation, the final ethanol concentrations were 58.7 ± 0.09 and 59.1 ± 0.08 g/l molasses with lu

Integração das principais tecnologias de obtenção de etanol através do processamento de celulose (2ª geração) nas atuais usinas de processamento de cana-de-açúcar (1ª geração). / Integration of ethanol production technologies throw the cellulose processing (2nd generation) on existing sugar cane processing units (1st generation).
The demand for energy has been increasing due to world development. Renewable energy of biomass, biofuel and electric energy have an important role to assist this growth, due to sustainable development policies and to the pressure of global organizations. The main aim of this dissertation is to demonstrate that the integration of second-generation technologi

9. Modificação de linhagens industriais de Saccharomyces cerevisiae para o aumento da produtividade de alcool e floculação condicional / Genetic modification of industrial Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain to improve ethanol production and conditional flocculation
The increased need for replacing energy sources from fossil oil to renewable sources has prompted research initiatives throughout the world. Bioethanol is a highly competitive candidate to replace fuels such as gasoline. The production of Brazilian ethanol occurs by the fermentation of sugars from sugar cane juice by the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The i

10. Desenvolvimento de marcadores moleculares EST-SSRs e mapeamento funcional em cana-de-açucar (Saccharum spp.) / Development of EST-SSR molecular markers and functional mapping in sugarcane
Sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) is one of the most important cash crops, highly contributing towards the production of raw sugar and bioethanol produced worldwide. Even though Brazil is the major producer, sugar yield is considered low. Breeding programs for the attainment of new improved sugarcane varieties, which are more productive and more resistant to plague
