13. Quantitative Measurement of Precipitating Antibodies in Streptococcal Grouping Antisera by the Single Radial Immunodiffusion Technique
A comparative study was made of the single radial immunodiffusion test and the classical quantitative precipitin test for determining the amount of precipitable antibodies present in streptococcal groups A and C antisera. The potency of 21 group A and 54 group C antisera was determined by both methods; purified group-specific carbohydrates were used as antig

14. Immunogenicity of a 26-Valent Group A Streptococcal Vaccine
A multivalent vaccine containing amino-terminal M protein fragments from 26 different serotypes of group A streptococci was constructed by recombinant techniques. The vaccine consisted of four different recombinant proteins that were formulated with alum to contain 400 μg of protein per dose. Rabbits were immunized via the intramuscular route at 0, 4, and 1

15. Antibody against Surface-Bound C5a Peptidase Is Opsonic and Initiates Macrophage Killing of Group B Streptococci
The capsular polysaccharides of group B streptococci (GBS) are a primary focus of vaccine development. Immunogenicity and long-lasting protection are best achieved by conjugating polysaccharides to a T-cell-dependent protein antigen. Streptococcal C5a peptidase (SCPB) is a conserved surface protein that is expressed by all streptococcal serotypes tested to d

16. emm Typing of M Nontypeable Invasive Group A Streptococcal Isolates in Israel
We performed emm typing of M nontypeable invasive group A streptococcal (GAS) isolates collected in a prospective population-based study in Israel. One hundred twenty of 131 isolates (92%) had emm sequences compatible with GAS, consisting of 51 different emm types. Eleven isolates were found to be group G streptococcus. Of the 120 isolates, 55 (46%) belonged

17. National Department of Defense Surveillance Data for Antibiotic Resistance and emm Gene Types of Clinical Group A Streptococcal Isolates from Eight Basic Training Military Sites†
Antibiotic resistance and emm gene types were examined from 692 Group A streptococci isolates from eight United States military basic training sites between 1998 and 2001. Macrolide resistance was associated with geographic sites and emm type. These data are useful for vaccine development initiatives and antimicrobial treatment considerations.

18. Intranasal Vaccination with Streptococcal Fibronectin Binding Protein Sfb1 Fails To Prevent Growth and Dissemination of Streptococcus pyogenes in a Murine Skin Infection Model
Fibronectin binding protein F1 (Sfb1) of Streptococcus pyogenes (group A streptococcus [GAS]) is a well-characterized adhesin that has been shown to induce protection in mice against a lethal intranasal GAS challenge after intranasal immunization with cholera toxin B subunit (CTB) as adjuvant. With a murine skin infection model, we have shown that Sfb1/CTB v

19. Intranasal Immunization of Mice with Group B Streptococcal Protein Rib and Cholera Toxin B Subunit Confers Protection against Lethal Infection
Intranasal immunization of mice with Rib, a cell surface protein of group B streptococcus (GBS), conjugated to or simply coadministered with the recombinant cholera toxin B subunit, induces systemic immunoglobulin G (IgG) and local IgA antibody responses and confers protection against lethal GBS infection. These findings have implications for the development

20. Homologous and heterologous protection of mice with group A streptococcal M protein vaccines.
Purified streptococcal M proteins precipitated with alum (APM) were used to immunize mice. A trivalent vaccine of serotypes 1, 3, and 12 protected mice against challenges by homologous live streptococci and also conferred protection against serotypes 6 and 14 but not against a strain of group B streptococci. Monovalent APM vaccines afforded homologous protec

21. Production of 19S IgM Antibodies with Restricted Heterogeneity from Sharks
Two of three nurse sharks, Ginglymostoma cirratum, immunized with streptococcal A-variant vaccine, produced over 7 mg/ml serum of 19S IgM antibody to the group-specific carbohydrate. The light chains of this specific antibody from one shark were separated into multiple bands by disc electrophoresis. The light chains from the other antibody-producing animal w

22. Neonatal mouse protection against infection with multiple group B streptococcal (GBS) serotypes by maternal immunization with a tetravalent GBS polysaccharide-tetanus toxoid conjugate vaccine.
Most cases of neonatal sepsis and meningitis caused by group B streptococci (GBS) are attributable to one of four major capsular serotypes: Ia, Ib, II, or III. Because resistance to infection with GBS has been correlated with the presence of serum antibodies to the type-specific capsular polysaccharides in both experimental animals and human neonates, effort

23. Effects of Alum Adjuvant or a Booster Dose on Immunogenicity during Clinical Trials of Group B Streptococcal Type III Conjugate Vaccines
Phase 1 and 2 clinical trials of group B streptococcal (GBS) capsular polysaccharide (CPS)-protein conjugate vaccines in healthy adults have demonstrated their safety and improved immunogenicity compared with uncoupled CPSs. Two recent trials sought to determine (i) whether adsorption of conjugate vaccine to aluminum hydroxide would improve immunogenicity an

24. Analysis of toxicity of streptococcal pyrogenic exotoxin A mutants.
Streptococcal pyrogenic exotoxin A (SPE A) is secreted by some strains of Streptococcus pyogenes and is strongly associated with streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS), a severe and often fatal illness. SPE A possesses a number of biological properties, some of which are shared with a group of exotoxins of streptococcal and staphylococcal origins, the pyr
