1. O plÃsmon da regiÃo de recobrimento da ligaÃÃo quÃmica como ferramenta para caracterizaÃÃo de materiais
Important issues can be raised about the possibility of relations between macroscopic properties of materials and concepts, introduced recently, of the chemical bond overlap polarizability (PR) and the concept of ionic specific valence (VIE). A proposal in which the overlap region of chemical bond is considered as a âplasmon‐likeâ charge distribution

2. ANIMATED TRANSITIONS FOR WEB APPLICATIONS BASED ON MODELS / TRANSIÇÕES ANIMADAS EM APLICAÇÕES WEB BASEADAS EM MODELOS
In this dissertation we introduce an approach for the authoring of animated transitions in Web applications. The transitions can be defined as navigational state changes that result in the alteration of the presented widgets and interface. These alterations are usually represented abruptly through non-animated interfaces. The use of animation allows a gradua

4. ASYMMETRIC EFFECTS AND LONG MEMORY IN THE VOLATILITY OF DJIA STOCKS / EFEITOS DE ASSIMETRIA E MEMÓRIA LONGA NA VOLATILIDADE DE AÇÕES DO ÍNDICE DOW JONES

5. Dependence of transition probabilities for non-linear photo-ionization of He atoms on the structure of the exciting radiation pulses
We discuss the expected dependence of the probability transitions for 2-photon and 3-photon absorption in Helium gas on the spatial and temporal structure of the exciting radiation pulses. Regarding spatial structure, we assumed a Gaussian radial intensity distribution; we find, as expected, that the 2-photon and 3-photon processes become negligible at dista

6. Toroidal milling of hardened SAE H13 steel
It is estimated that around 65% of the cost of a die or mould is related to the machining processes. Moreover, the literature says that 70% of the time spent in the machining processes of this kind of parts is used in finishing and semi-finishing operations. The high complexity of the machined surfaces makes mandatory the use of ball nose tools, with large o

7. Thermal behavior of myofibrillar proteins from the adductor muscles of scallops: a differential scanning calorimetric study (DSC)
Muscles and different proteins obtained from scallops (Chlamys tehuelchus and Zygochlamys patagonica) were analyzed. In both species of scallop, the thermograms of striated and smooth muscles showed two endothermic transitions. The Tmax values corresponding to striated and smooth muscles from C. tehuelchus were 53.2, 79.0ºC and 52.7, 78.0 ºC, respectively.

8. REGIME-SWITCHING MODELS: THRESHOLDS, SMOOTH TRANSITIONS, AND NEURAL NETWORKS / MODELOS COM MÚLTIPLOS REGIMES PARA SÉRIES TEMPORAIS: LIMIARES, TRANSIÇÕES SUAVES E REDES NEURAIS
The goal of this thesis is to propose more flexible regime-switching models combining the ideas from the SETAR, STAR, and ANN specifications. The models discussed in this thesis are models with multi-regimes and with the transition between regimes controlled by a linear combination of known variables. A modelling cycle procedure, based on the work of Teräsv

9. Evidence for invasion of a human oral cell line by Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans.
Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, an oral bacterial species associated with periodontal disease, was found to invade human cell lines. Invasion was demonstrated by recovery of viable organisms from gentamicin-treated KB cell monolayers and by light and electron microscopy. Internalization occurred through a cytochalasin D-sensitive process. Invasion effi

10. Lipid Crystallization in Senescent Membranes from Cotyledons
Lipid transition temperatures for rough and smooth microsomal membranes isolated from bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) cotyledon tissue at various stages of germination were determined by wide angle x-ray diffraction. The transition temperatures were established by recording diffraction patterns through a temperature series until a sharp x-ray reflection centered a

11. Functional transitions in myosin: Formation of a critical salt-bridge and transmission of effect to the sensitive tryptophan
For analyzing the mechanism of energy transduction in the “motor” protein, myosin, it is opportune both to model the structural change in the hydrolytic transition, ATP (myosin-bound) + H2O → ADP⋅Pi (myosin-bound) and to check the plausibility of the model by appropriate site-directed mutations in the functional system. Here, we made a series of muta

12. Lipid and protein segregation in Escherichia coli membrane: morphological and structural study of different cytoplasmic membrane fractions.
Lipid and protein segregations can be induced in E. coli cytoplasmic membranes by conformational transitions of their lipid hydrocarbon chains from a disordered to an ordered state. For E. coli strain K 1059 (an unsaturated fatty acid auxotroph) supplemented with linolenic acid, the segregation leads to large areas of membrane surfaces having distinctly diff
