1. Infecção pelo herpesvírus 8 humano (HHV-8) em populações indígenas e não indígenas da Amazônia brasileira / Human herpesvirus-8 infection in amerindian and non-amerindian populations in the brazilian Amazon region
Human herpes virus type 8 (HHV-8) is hyperendemic in Amerindian populations, but its modes of transmission are unknown. Objectives: 1. Study the Human Herpesvirus-8 Infection and Oral Shedding in Amerindian and Non-Amerindian Populations in the Brazilian Amazon Region. 2. Methods: Antibodies against either HHV-8 latency-associated nuclear antigen (LANA) or H

2. The importance of genetic polymorphism of T-lymphotropic virus Human T-cell type 1 (HTLV-1) in determining the origin of the epidemic and in the pathogenesis of myelopathy in Brazil / A importância de polimorfismo genético do Vírus Linfotrópico para células T Humanas do tipo 1 (HTLV-1) na determinação da origem da epidemia e na patogênese da mielopatia no Brasil

3. Evaluation of Hepatitis C virus seroprevalence in patients with Sexually Transmitted Diseases in São Paulo, Brazil / Avaliação da soroprevalência do vírus da hepatite C em pacientes portadores de doenças sexualmente transmissíveis na cidade de São Paulo
Introduction: The infection caused by the Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is currently one of the major issues in public health all over the world. The viruss main route of transmission is parenteral, either by transfusion of blood and blood products or by intravenous drug use. The transmission of HCV by sexual contact is questionable, and has become the focus of re

4. Incidence estimation of congenital toxoplasmosis in the São Paulo Metropolitan Region from mathematical modelling of the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in the community of Caieiras, São Paulo, Brazil / Estimativa da incidência da toxoplasmose congênita na Região Metropolitana de São Paulo a partir da modelagem matemática da soroprevalência do Toxoplasma gondii na comunidade de Caieiras, São Paulo, Brasil

6. Desenvolvimento de um método sorológico para o diagnóstico laboratorial da esquistossomose mansoni baseado em peptídeos sintéticos / Development of a serologic method for laboratory diagnosis of the schistosomiasis mansoni based on synthetic peptides
Based on algorithms of hidrophilicity and flexibility, obtained by the use of the ProtScale software, disposable at the site http://au.expasy.org/cgi-bin/protscale.pl, seven potentially antigenic peptides were selected from different Schistosoma mansoni proteins: cathepsin B (Sm31), heat shock protein (SmHSP-70), cathodic circulating antigen (CCA) and the po

8. Potential Application of Nonstructural Protein NS1 Serotype-Specific Immunoglobulin G Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay in the Seroepidemiologic Study of Dengue Virus Infection: Correlation of Results with Those of the Plaque Reduction Neutralization Test
An NS1 serotype-specific indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed to differentiate primary and secondary dengue virus infections and serotypes of primary dengue virus infection. For this report, we carried out retrospective seroepidemiologic studies on serum samples collected from residents of Liuchiu Hsiang, Pingtung County, an isola

9. A Reverse-Sandwich Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay for Verocytotoxin 1 and 2 Antibodies in Human and Bovine Sera
A reverse-sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), in which an antibody is sandwiched by antigens, was established for the titration of antibodies to verocytotoxins (VT) in human and animal sera. This assay has two advantages over a conventional indirect ELISA: (i) higher specificity and sensitivity and (ii) the ability to comparably titrate

10. Differences in Clinical and Convalescent-Phase Antibodies of Rhesus Monkeys Infected with Monkey Pox, Tanapox, and Yaba Poxviruses
Complement-fixing and complement-fixing inhibiting (CFI) antibodies were demonstrated in the clinical and convalescent stages, respectively, of rhesus monkeys infected with either monkey poxvirus, Tanapoxvirus, or Yaba poxvirus. Specificity of the CFI antibody was confirmed by its failure to cross-react with heterologous poxvirus antigens and by experiments

11. Use of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays with chimeric fusion proteins to titrate antibodies against Epstein-Barr virus nuclear antigen 1.
Two new enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) with chimeric fusion polypeptides for the detection of human antibodies specific to Epstein-Barr virus nuclear antigen 1 (EBNA-1) are described. One is an indirect ELISA with affinity-purified beta-galactosidase-EBNA-1 fusion protein as the antigen. The other is a "sandwich" assay based on the use of anti-b

12. Chronic fatigue syndrome. A critical appraisal of the role of Epstein-Barr virus.
The symptom complex currently designated the chronic fatigue syndrome was previously termed the chronic or chronic active Epstein-Barr virus syndrome or the chronic mononucleosis syndrome, prematurely assuming an etiologic role for the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). This presumption derived from the fact that some patients with the chronic fatigue syndrome have v
