1. Soil seed bank in a subtropical grassland under different grazing intensities
ABSTRACT Grazing is an important determinant for the composition and structure of grasslands; however, soil seed bank (SSB) response to grazing intensity is poorly investigated. We analyzed SSB richness and density in a subtropical grassland in southern Brazil with different forage offers (low, intermediate, high and very high), that is, contrasting grazing

2. The effects of two abundant ant species on soil nutrients and seedling recruitment in Brazilian Atlantic Forest
ABSTRACT Ants can influence soil fertility and the spatial distribution of seeds, with possible effects on seedling recruitment. The ant species Pachycondyla striata Fr. Smith, 1858 and Odontomachus chelifer (Latreille, 1802) co-occur in many forest areas in the Neotropics. We assessed soil fertility and seed bank structure in soil samples close and distant

3. Thrips species associated with varieties of the native cerrado fruit tree Hancornia speciosa

4. Storage and in vitro germination of orchids (Orchidaceae) seeds from Atlantic Forest – Brazil
Abstract: The orchid seed banks of Atlantic Forest may be considered a key strategy for the conservation of species threatened with extinction by indiscriminate collection or habitat destruction. The aim of this study was to evaluate the seed viability, to choose the best culture medium for the asymbiotic germination and evaluate germination, after storage f

5. Intraspecific variation in seed size and light intensity affect seed germination and initial seedling growth of a tropical shrub
ABSTRACT Seed germination and seedling performance are affected by environmental factors and seed traits. In this study we investigated the effects of seed size and light intensity on germinability and seedling development of Copaifera oblongifolia. A total of 225 seeds were individually weighed and sown in three germination trays composed of 75 cells each.

6. Effects of flooding and its temporal variation on seedling recruitment from the soil seed bank of a Neotropical floodplain
ABSTRACT Evaluation of the effects of flooding on seedling recruitment from seed banks helps in understanding vegetation regeneration in floodplains. We studied the effects of simulated flooding on richness and abundance of, and temporal variation in, seedling recruitment from the soil seed bank of a floodable savanna of the Pantanal wetland, under two condi

7. Effects of flooding on the spatial distribution of soil seed and spore banks of native grasslands of the Pantanal wetland
ABSTRACTTo better understand the role that flooding plays in shaping plant communities of native floodable grasslands of the Pantanal and to characterize the spatial distribution of plants, we present the results of a survey of soil seed and spore banks using the seedling emergence method. We hypothesized that terrain subjected to the deepest and longest flo

8. Reproductive biology and early establishment of Pinus elliottii var. elliottii in Brazilian sandy coastal plain vegetation: implications for biological invasion
Pinus is the most invasive woody taxon, exceeded only by herbaceous plants. This study reports the reproductive biology and early establishment of Pinus elliottii Engelm. var. elliottii, describing its invasive properties in a protected natural area of the Brazilian coastal sandy plains. We evaluated the seed germination and rain, longevity of seed viability

9. MECANISMOS DE REGENERAÇÃO NATURAL E ESTRUTURA POPULACIONAL DE TRÊS ESPÉCIES ARBÓREAS EM REMANESCENTE DE FLORESTA OMBRÓFILA MISTA, RIO GRANDE DO SUL / NATURAL REGENERATION MECHANISMS AND POPULATION STRUCTURE OF THREE SPECIES IN MIXED RAIN FOREST REMNANT, RIO GRANDE DO SUL
The ecology of regeneration and population dynamics is necessary information to the conservation and management of forest ecosystems. Thus, this study aimed to characterize: a) the mechanisms of natural regeneration in a Mixed Rain Forest remnant and b) the population structure of Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze, Blepharocalyx salicifolius (Kunth) O.

10. Studies on soil seed bank, rescue of shoots and dynamics of the landscape for forest restoration purposes, Carandaí, MG / Estudos sobre banco de sementes do solo, resgate de plântulas e dinâmica da paisagem para fins de restauração florestal, Carandaí, MG

This work aimed at to evaluate the germination and the viability of the seeds that compose the soil seed bank of a degraded area of Cerrado, in the Fazenda Água Limpa, Vargem Bonita, DF, in the end of the rainy station (may of 2006). A band of sampling of 4000 m was installed in the study area, which had been burnt in the year of 2005. In the interior of th
