17. Economic and environmental analysis on intensifying beef cattle production in the Brazilian Center-West / Análise econômico-ambiental da intensificação da pecuária de corte no Centro-Oeste brasileiro
The beef cattle industry that generates jobs and income for billions of people around the world has been drawing attention over negative impacts caused to the environment. This is due to the extensive production system adopted in most producing areas, which consumes a large amount of natural resources such as land and water. In recent decades, the growing co

20. In vitro H2 utilization by a ruminal acetogenic bacterium cultivated alone or in association with an archaea methanogen is stimulated by a probiotic strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
The effects of a live strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae on hydrogen utilization and acetate and methane production by two hydrogenotrophic ruminal microorganisms, an acetogenic bacterial strain and an archaea methanogen, were investigated. The addition of yeast cells enhanced by more than fivefold the hydrogenotrophic metabolism of the acetogenic strain and

21. Fermentation of methanol in the sheep rumen.
Sheep fed a hay-concentrate diet were adapted to pectin administration and ruminal infusion of methanol. Both treatments resulted in a strong increase in the rate of methanogenesis from methanol. Quantitative data show that methanol was exclusively converted into methane. Treatments did not influence ruminal volatile fatty acid percentages.

22. Targeting Methanopterin Biosynthesis To Inhibit Methanogenesis
This paper describes the design, synthesis, and successful employment of inhibitors of 4-(β-d-ribofuranosyl)aminobenzene-5′-phosphate (RFA-P) synthase, which catalyzes the first committed step in the biosynthesis of methanopterin, to specifically halt the growth of methane-producing microbes. RFA-P synthase catalyzes the first step in the synthesis of tet

23. Postprandial changes in methanogenic and acidogenic bacteria in the rumens of steers fed high- or low-forage diets once daily.
Four ruminally fistulated Hereford steers (400 kg) were fed two isocaloric diets at 1.5 x maintenance once daily in a repeated measurement crossover experiment. Postprandial changes in hydrogen-oxidizing, carbon dioxide-reducing bacterial groups were monitored. The methanogenic bacterial populations were present at densities of 4 x 10(8) to 8 x 10(8)/g of ru

24. Simple Method to Remove Completely Ciliate Protozoa of Adult Ruminants1
Dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate (Aerosol OT) has been used in a remarkably short period to obtain rumen ciliate-free cows. Two 30-g doses of Aerosol OT given on consecutive days appeared to effectively eliminate all types of rumen ciliate protozoa without harming the health of the host animal. Measurement of the rumen metabolic parameters of gas production, ca
