1. Chromosome diversity in Buthidae and Chactidae scorpions from Brazilian fauna: Diploid number and distribution of repetitive DNA sequences
Abstract In this work, we analyzed cytogenetically eight Chactidae and Buthidae, including the localization of repetitive DNA sequences. The chactids possess monocentric chromosomes and the highest diploid numbers (2n=50 in Brotheas amazonicus, 2n=36 in Chactopsis amazonica, 2n=30 in Neochactas sp.) when compared with buthids (2n=10 in Tityus bahiensis, 2n=1

2. Isolation, identification and characterization of endophytic fungi of Bambusa oldhamii munro applied as antagonists to Pyricularia oryzae
ABSTRACT Endophytic fungi, in addition to improving plant development, may produce antimicrobial substances that can inhibit pathogens. The objective of this study was to isolate and characterize endophytic fungi of Bambusa oldhamii and evaluate in vitro antagonism to Pyricularia oryzae. Fungal isolates of B. oldhamii shoots were purified and identified by n

3. Phylogenetic placement of Tritirachium strains from the URM culture collection originally founded by Augusto Chaves Batista (1916-1967) in Brazil, and the description of T. batistae sp. nov.
ABSTRACT Twenty-seven Tritirachium strains were present in the URM culture collection originally founded in Brazil by Augusto Chaves Batista. Fifteen freshly-prepared cultures were obtained from these original strains preserved under mineral oil. DNA was extracted for analysing phylogenetic relationships using the sequence information available from Tritirac

4. Dominant yeasts associated to mango (Mangifera indica) and rose apple (Syzygium malaccense) fruit pulps investigated by culture-based methods
Abstract: The biotechnological potential of yeasts associated to different habitats in Colombia has been poorly studied, especially the yeasts associated with different plant structures. Fruit pulps are interesting substrates mainly for the growth of yeast species, that can positively affect the productivity and quality of some bioeconomic species. Therefore

5. Araucaria angustifolia chloroplast genome sequence and its relation to other Araucariaceae
Abstract Araucaria angustifolia is endemic to southern Brazil. Known as Brazilian pine, A. angustifolia is the only native conifer species with economic and social relevance in this country. Due to massive exploitation, it has suffered a significant population decline and currently is classified as critically endangered. This encouraged the scientific commun

6. Cytogenetic markers as tools in delimiting species of the highly diverse Neotropical fish Bryconamericus (Characiformes: Characidae)

7. [PROVISIONAL] Does the chromosomal position of 35S rDNA sites influence their transcription? A survey on Nothoscordum species (Amaryllidaceae)
Abstract 35S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) sites are the regions where the ribosomal genes 18S, 5.8S and 25S, responsible for the formation of the nucleoli, are found. The fact that rDNA sites have non-random distribution on chromosomes suggests that their position on the chromosome may influence their transcription. In order to identify if the preferentially transcr

8. Molecular identification and histological aspects of Renicola sloanei (Digenea: Renicolidae) in Puffinus puffinus (Procellariiformes): a first record

9. Infection by the microsporidium of Clado Nosema/Vairimorpha in pupal parasitoids
Abstract: The sugarcane borer, Diatraea saccharalis is one of the hosts more used for parasitoid pupal multiplication in Brazil. The parasitoids pupal of Trichospilus diatraeae and Palmistichus elaeisis are generalist natural enemies with potential to suppress populations of diverse families of lepidopteran pests. The success in the utilization of these natu

10. Comparison of rRNA-based reverse transcription PCR and rDNA-based PCR for the detection of streptococci in root canal infections
Abstract Objective The rDNA-based method is unable to distinguish between alive and dead cells. Alternatively, bacterial viability can be assessed by molecular methods based on ribosomal RNA (rRNA). Therefore, this study aimed to detect viable streptococci in root canal samples using rRNA-based reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), comp

11. Cytogenetics and DNA barcode reveal an undescribed Apareiodon species (Characiformes: Parodontidae)
Abstract Parodontidae is a small group of fish and some species are particularly difficult to identify due to the lack of sufficiently consistent morphological traits. Cytogenetically, the species possess 2n = 54 chromosomes and are either sex-homomorphic or sex-heteromorphic (regarding its chromosomes). We evaluated data on color, tooth morphology, cytogene

12. Population Changes of Eubacteria, Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria and Methanogenic Archaea in an Anaerobic Reactor Processing Ethanol Distillery Vinasse
Abstract The microbiological characterization by molecular techniques (DGGE and quantitative PCR) of Archaea, Bacteria domain and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) from a laboratory scale Up-flow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) processing sugar cane vinasse was performed during the operational phase with increasing organic loads. The organic load removal effic
