1. Dispersion of transposable elements and multigene families: Microstructural variation in Characidium (Characiformes: Crenuchidae) genomes
Abstract Eukaryotic genomes consist of several repetitive DNAs, including dispersed DNA sequences that move between chromosome sites, tandem repeats of DNA sequences, and multigene families. In this study, repeated sequences isolated from the genome of Characidium gomesi were analyzed and mapped to chromosomes in Characidium zebra and specimens from two popu

2. Genomic and phylogenetic evidence of VIPER retrotransposon domestication in trypanosomatids
Transposable elements are important residents of eukaryotic genomes and eventually the host can domesticate them to serve cellular functions. We reported here a possible domestication event of the vestigial interposed retroelement (VIPER) in trypanosomatids. We found a large gene in a syntenic location in Leishmania braziliensis, L. panamensis, Leptomanas py

3. Differential detection of transposable elements between Saccharum species
Cultivars of sugarcane (Saccharum) are hybrids between species S. officinarum (x = 10, 2n = 8x = 80) and S. spontaneum (x=8,2n=5-16x =40-128). These accessions have 100 to 130 chromosomes, 80-85% of which are derived from S. officinarum, 10-15% from S. spontaneum, and 5-10% are possible recombinants between the two genomes. The aim of this study was to analy

4. Citogenética clássica e molecular do boto-vermelho Inia geoffrensis (Blainville, 1817)

6. Spatiotemporal transcription of the P element and the 412 retrotransposon during embryogenesis of Drosophila melanogaster and D. willistoni
Transposable elements (TEs) are mobile nucleotide sequences which, through changing position in host genomes, partake in important evolutionary processes. The expression patterns of two TEs, P element transposon and 412 retrotransposon, were investigated during Drosophila melanogaster and D. willistoni embryogenesis, by means of embryo hybridization using ri

8. Efficiency of IRAP and ITS-RFLP marker systems in accessing genetic variation of Pyrenophora graminea
The usefulness of IRAP (inter-retrotransposon amplified polymorphism) and ITS-RFLP (restriction of PCR-amplified internal transcribed spacers of the rDNA) markers in the analysis of 39 Pyrenophora graminea isolates was determined. Each marker system could discriminate between all of the isolates in detecting polymorphism, albeit with variable efficiency. IRA

9. Distribution and conservation of the transposable element gypsy in Drosophilid species
In an attempt to understand the dynamics of transposable elements (T’S) in the genome of host species, we investigated the distribution, representativeness and conservation of DNA sequences homologous to the Drosophila melanogaster gypsy retrotransposon in 42 drosophilid species. Our results extended the knowledge about the wide distribution of gypsy in th

10. Genetic mapping of AFLP and retrotransposon-derived markers in sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) / Mapeamento genético de marcadores AFLP e de retrotransposons em cana-de-açúcar (Saccharum spp.)

11. Transposable elements P and gypsy in natural populations of Drosophila willistoni
The presence and integrity of the P transposon and the gypsy retrotransposon in the genome of 18 samples of natural Drosophila willistoni populations collected from a large area of South America were Southern blot screened using Drosophila melanogaster probes. The aim of this screening was provide further knowledge-base on the geographical distribution of D.
