25. Action of abscisic and gibberellic acids on senescence of cut gladiolus flowers
ABSTRACT The gladiolus flower is classified as insensitive to ethylene. Thus, the signals that initiate senescence are poorly understood. This study evaluated the role of abscisic and gibberellic acids on postharvest senescence of 3 cultivars of cut gladiolus flowers (Gladiolus grandiflora Hort.). Stalks were harvested and placed in test tube containing 100

26. Adsorption of Silver (I) From Aqueous Solution Using Chitosan/Montmorillonite Composite Beads
Chitosan/montmorillonite (CTS-MMT) composite beads were used as adsorbents for the removal of silver ion (Ag+) from aqueous solution. Equilibrium adsorption was achieved within 150 min at 3% MMT of chitosan solution. The optimum pH value for Ag+ removal was found to be 6-7. The maximum adsorbent dosage for Ag+ removal was 5 g/L. Under above maximum condition

27. Micronutrient and Silicon Uptake and Removal by Upland Rice Cultivars with Different Plant Architecture
ABSTRACT Upland rice cultivars manifest different nutritional demands. A field study was conducted to quantify the extraction, distribution, and removal of micronutrients and silicon by the upland rice cultivars. The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block-split plot design. Plots consisted of three cultivars (Caiapó – traditional, BRS Prim

28. Canopy management effects on ‘Syrah’ grapevines under tropical semi-arid conditions
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of shoot topping and leaf removal practices on vegetative vigor, yield and physicochemical characteristics of the 'Syrah' grape in the semi-arid tropical climate conditions of the São Francisco River Valley in the northeast of Brazil. The experiment was conducted over five growing cycles from 2010 t

29. Sugarcane trash levels in soil affects the fungi but not bacteria in a short-term field experiment
Abstract The sugarcane in Brazil is passing through a management transition that is leading to the abolition of pre-harvest burning. Without burning, large amounts of sugarcane trash is generated, and there is a discussion regarding the utilization of this biomass in the industry versus keeping it in the field to improve soil quality. To study the effects of

30. Combined effect of end-rounded versus tapered bristles and a dentifrice on plaque removal and gingival abrasion
Abstract Two previous clinical studies evaluated the effect of end-rounded versus tapered bristles of soft manual brushes on the removal of plaque and gingival abrasion. However, the combined effect of an abrasive dentifrice on these outcomes has yet to be understood. The purpose of the present study was to compare the incidence of gingival abrasion and the

31. The Effects of Two Different Cleaning and Disinfection Programs on Broiler Performance and Microbiological Status of Broiler Houses
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of two cleaning and disinfection programs on broiler performance and on the microbiological status of the facilities. This trial was an observational study of comparative character. Two experiments were conducted, with 960 birds each. Both experiments were carried out in a positive-pressur

32. Efficacy of fungal decolorization of a mixture of dyes belonging to different classes
Dyes are the most difficult constituents to remove by conventional biological wastewater treatment. Colored wastewater is mainly eliminated by physical and chemical procedures, which are very expensive and have drawbacks. Therefore, the advantage of using biological processes, such as the biotransformation of dyes, is that they may lead to complete mineraliz

33. THE "CHEMICAL OXYGEN DEMAND / TOTAL VOLATILE ACIDS" RATIO AS AN ANAEROBIC TREATABILITY INDICATOR FOR LANDFILL LEACHATES
Abstract In some operational circumstances a fast evaluation of landfill leachate anaerobic treatability is necessary, and neither Biochemical Methane Potential nor BOD/COD ratio are fast enough. Looking for a fast indicator, this work evaluated the anaerobic treatability of landfill leachate from São Carlos-SP (Brazil) in a pilot scale Anaerobic Sequence B

35. Electroremediation of heavy metals in sewage sludge
This paper presents the application of electrokinetic remediation in the treatment of sludge in a sewage treatment station. The study consisted of, in a first step, the characterization of physicochemical parameters of sludge and, in a second step, the implementation of the electrokinetic remediation technique. The concentrations of Cu, Cr, Pb and Zn in slud

36. Use of calcined layered double hydroxides for the removal of color and organic matter from textile effluents: kinetic, equilibrium and recycling studies
This paper presents data for the synthesis and characterization of layer double hydroxides (LDH) and their use for color and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal from effluents generated by a textile industry. Adsorption studies with raw and biologically treated (activated sludge) textile effluent showed that the pseudo-second order model best fitted the exp
