1. BRAZILIAN FINANCIAL CRISIS IN THE 1980S: HISTORICAL PRECEDENT OF AN ECONOMY GOVERNED BY FINANCIAL INTERESTS

2. An alert on the recent fall of the fiscal reaction in Brazil

3. US real interest rates and default risk in emerging economies
This paper empirically investigates the impact of changes in US real interest rates on sovereign default risk in emerging economies using the method of identification through heteroskedasticity. Policy-induced increases in US interest rates starkly raise default risk in emerging market economies. However, the overall correlation between US real interest rate

4. The "hot money" phenomenon in Brazil
Because of its high interest rates, Brazil attracts more and more speculative capital flows, called "hot money", under the form of foreign loans, direct or portfolio investments. Actually, the country is directly involved in a carry-trade strategy that tends to appreciate the real, what penalizes the Brazilian exportations of manufactured products. Moreover,

5. CARRY TRADE AND INTEREST RATE DIFFERENTIAL: EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS IN BRAZIL / CARRY TRADE E DIFERENCIAL DE JUROS: ANÁLISE EMPÍRICA NO BRASIL

8. Choques monetários e tecnológicos e as flutuações cíclicas na economia brasileira / Monetary and technological shocks and cyclical fluctuations in the Brazilian economy
Models of real business cycles emphasize real shocks as a way to explain the behavior of the economic cycle; however, in economies like Brazil, where recent economic crises have originated in monetary instability, the nominal shocks can have great importance in explaining economic fluctuations. In this context, this study sought to examine the relevance of t

9. Efeitos da política de equalização das taxas de juros do crédito rural nas regiões brasileiras / Effects of the interest rates equalization policy of rural credit on the brazilian regions

10. Exchange rate regulation, the behavior of exchange rates, and macroeconomic stability in Brazil
In the last two decades an entirely new set of rules governing the foreign exchange transactions was established in Brazil, substituting for the framework inherited from the 1930s. Foreign exchange controls were dismantled and a floating exchange rate regime replaced different forms of peg. In this paper we argue that although successful by comparison to pre

11. Exchange rate policies, patterns of specialization and economic development : theory and evidence in developing countries
The objectives of this paper are twofold. First, it intends to provide theoretical elements to analyze the relation between real exchange rates and economic development. Our main hypothesis is very much in line with the Dutch disease literature, and states that competitive currencies contribute to the existence and maintenance of the manufacturing sector in

12. The real mechanisms of the global economy
The paper presents the main arguments of Bresser Pereira's Globalization and Competition. Development strategies based on the 'conventional orthodoxy' are shown to carry serious drawbacks ("Dutch disease", pernicious effects of external saving, currency overvaluation), while a 'new developmentalism' is promoted, in spite of the widespread belief that the nat
