1. Medidas de velocidade de arrastamento de elétrons no isobutano puro / Measurements of electron drift velocity in pure isobutane
The electron drift velocity characterizes the electric conductivity of weakly ionized gases and is one of the most important transport parameters for simulation and modelling of radiation detectors and plasma discharges. This work presents the results of electron drift velocity as a function of the reduced electric field obtained in pure nitrogen and pure is

2. Experimental study of low-pressure nitrogen dielectric barrier discharge
The electrical and spectral characteristics of a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) are experimentally investigated in a sealed off coaxial cylinder filled with nitrogen at a pressure of 10 mbar. The discharge is a transient diffused glow at low frequency alternating voltage (60 Hz) and changes to a filamentary mode at high frequency alternating voltage (35

3. Development of an Acquisition System and Data Analysis for Measurements of Electron Transport Parameters in Gases / Desenvolvimento de sistema de aquisição e tratamento de dados para medidas de parâmetros de transporte de elétrons em gases
This thesis describes a pulsed Townsend experiment whose purpose was to obtain experimentally the transport parameters of electron in gases, particularly nitrogen and isobutane, within a range of reduced electric field between 130 Td and 210 Td. The transport parameters obtained were the average speed of center of mass of the electron cloud, the ionization r

5. Study of the effect of pulsed electric field on bone healing in rats tibia / Estudo do efeito de campo elétrico pulsado no reparo ósseo em tíbia de ratos
The concept that electrical stimulation promotes the repair of fractures has a long history, dated of 1812. The mechanism for which electrical stimulation promotes osteogenesis is still subject of scientific speculation, however that method non-pharmacological, used in the present work has already showed positive effects in the promotion and incentive of ost

Use of the pulsed electroacoustic technique for the study polyethilens and lead zirconate titanate (PZT).
The purpose this work was using to PEA method for investigation of the ferroelectrics response in PZT and space charge formation in polymeric materials (PE, XLPE) used as electrical insulation for high voltage devices. The PEA method is based on propagation acoustic signal generated by the application of a short electric field pulse, typically 5 ns in durati

7. Cluster of Candida parapsilosis primary bloodstream infection in a neonatal intensive care unit
Candida parapsilosis is an increasingly important bloodstream pathogen in neonatal intensive care units (NICU). We investigated a cluster of bloodstream infections in a NICU to determine whether nosocomial transmission occurred. During a 3-day period, 3 premature infants hospitalized in the same unit presented with sepsis caused by C. parapsilosis. Electroph

The interaction between ions and the electric double layer of micelles and biological membranes depends on a balance between the electrostatic torces and the hydrophobic effect. In this work, the interaction of the ions anilinium, benzoate, p-toluenesulfonate and benzenesulfonate with micelles was studied in nematic Iyotropic liquid crystals and isotropic so

Non-thermal food pasteurization and sterilization technologies are receiving increasing attention. The advantage is that of sterilizing contaminants in liquid foods without denaturation of some physiological compounds such as proteins and vitamins. In this research, the effects of the shape of the treatment chamber (plate-plate electrodes and coaxial) and in

We show in this work the characteristics of an experimental device assembled in the Instituto de Física, Universidade Federal Flurninense (Linear Mirror Type Machine LISA) to produce Helium plasma by RF and to study its behavior when confined by a magnetic field with mirrors. The plasma was produced by a micro-wave generator of, fRF = 2.45 GHz, PRF = 800 Wa

11. Orientation of the agarose gel matrix in pulsed electric fields.
The technique of transient electric birefringence was used to investigate the effect of pulsed electric fields on the orientation of the agarose gel matrix. Orientation of the gel was observed at all electric field strengths. Very slow, time-dependent effects were observed when pulses of 10-100 V/cm were applied to 1% gels for 0.5-2 seconds, indicating that

12. Pulsed-Electric Field Treatment Enhances the Bactericidal Action of Nisin against Bacillus cereus
Vegetative cells of Bacillus cereus were subjected to low doses of nisin (0.06 μg/ml) and mild pulsed-electric field treatment (16.7 kV/cm, 50 pulses each of 2-μs duration). Combining both treatments resulted in a reduction of 1.8 log units more than the sum of the reductions obtained with the single treatments, indicating synergy.
