13. Antigenuria in infants with acute and congenital Chagas' disease.
Detection and partial characterization of Trypanosoma cruzi soluble antigens (SAg) in urine, as well as demonstration of parasite circulating antigens (CAg) in serum from pediatric patients with acute (10 patients) and congenital (10 patients) Chagas' disease, are reported. Classical techniques for parasite detection and antibody serology were also conducted

14. Demonstration of a capsule plasmid in Bacillus anthracis.
Virulent and certain avirulent strains of Bacillus anthracis harbor a plasmid, designated pXO2, which is involved in the synthesis of capsules. Two classes of rough, noncapsulated (Cap-) variants were isolated from the capsule-producing (Cap+) Pasteur vaccine strains ATCC 6602 and ATCC 4229. One class was cured of pXO2, and the other class still carried it.

15. Nonlinear-dynamical arrhythmia control in humans
Nonlinear-dynamical control techniques, also known as chaos control, have been used with great success to control a wide range of physical systems. Such techniques have been used to control the behavior of in vitro excitable biological tissue, suggesting their potential for clinical utility. However, the feasibility of using such techniques to control p

16. Direct evidence for functional self-protein/Ia-molecule complexes in vivo.
Through the development of a panel of murine hybridomas reactive to murine hemoglobin, we have been able to study the processing and presentation of self antigens by antigen-presenting cells. Our results demonstrate that peritoneal macrophages in vivo can process and potentially present the self-antigen hemoglobin. We have extended this finding to show that,

17. Demonstration of the bipartite nature of the genome of a single-stranded DNA plant virus by infection with the cloned DNA components.
Linear double-stranded (ds)DNA, obtained by excision of the cloned A and B components of tomato golden mosaic virus (TGMV) from recombinant plasmids, was found to infect plants and to elicit symptoms identical to those obtained with TGMV or TGMV DNA. Progeny virus isolated from plants infected with cloned DNA was infective and indistinguishable from TGMV on

18. The double-edged sword of COX-2 selective NSAIDs
THE LAUNCH OF THE CYCLOOXYGENASE-2 (COX-2) selective NSAIDs was based on 2 hypotheses: (1) the major adverse effects limiting the usefulness of nonselective NSAIDs are gastrointestinal in nature and (2) COX-2 selective NSAIDs are associated with fewer gastrointestinal adverse effects than nonselective NSAIDs. At the time of the launch, neither of these hypot

19. Combinatorial interactions of Serpent, Lozenge, and U-shaped regulate crystal cell lineage commitment during Drosophila hematopoiesis
The GATA factor Serpent (Srp) is required for hemocyte precursor formation during Drosophila hematopoiesis. These blood cell progenitors give rise to two distinct lineages within the developing embryo. Lozenge, a Runx protein homologue, and Glial cells missing-1 and -2 are essential for crystal cell and plasmatocyte production, respectively. In contrast U-sh

20. Demonstration of a low-energy on-pathway intermediate in a fast-folding protein by kinetics, protein engineering, and simulation
It is controversial whether fast-folding proteins can form productive on-pathway intermediates that are more stable than the denatured state because noncovalent intermediates are usually evanescent. Here, we apply the classical criteria for the existence of intermediates: namely, the intermediates form and react rapidly enough to be on pathway and they can b

21. Functional Analysis of the Tandem-Duplicated P450 Genes SPS/BUS/CYP79F1 and CYP79F2 in Glucosinolate Biosynthesis and Plant Development by Ds Transposition-Generated Double Mutants1
A significant fraction (approximately 17%) of Arabidopsis genes are members of tandemly repeated families and pose a particular challenge for functional studies. We have used the Ac-Ds transposition system to generate single- and double-knockout mutants of two tandemly duplicated cytochrome P450 genes, SPS/BUS/CYP79F1 and CYP79F2. We have previously describe

22. A Complementary Bioinformatics Approach to Identify Potential Plant Cell Wall Glycosyltransferase-Encoding Genes1[w]
Plant cell wall (CW) synthesizing enzymes can be divided into the glycan (i.e. cellulose and callose) synthases, which are multimembrane spanning proteins located at the plasma membrane, and the glycosyltransferases (GTs), which are Golgi localized single membrane spanning proteins, believed to participate in the synthesis of hemicellulose, pectin, mannans,
