13. Use of cinacalcet and sunitinib to treat hypercalcaemia due to a pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor
SUMMARY Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) can secrete hormones, including ectopic secretions, but they have been rarely associated with malignant hypercalcemia. A 52-year-old man with a history of diabetes mellitus was diagnosed with a pancreatic tumor. A pancreatic biopsy confirmed a well-differentiated pancreatic NET (pNET). The patient subsequently developed l

14. Hypocalcemia development in patients operated for primary hyperparathyroidism: Can it be predicted preoperatively?
ABSTRACT Objective Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHP) is a common endocrine disease, and its most effective treatment is surgery. Postoperative hypocalcemia is a morbidity of parathyroid surgeries, and it may extend hospitalization durations. The purpose of this study is to determine the predictive factors related to the development of hypocalcemia and hung

15. Experience with a third-generation parathyroid hormone assay (BIO-PTH) in the diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism in a Brazilian population
ABSTRACT Objective To evaluate the usefulness of a third-generation PTH assay in the diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). Subjects and methods Forty-one PHPT patients (4 men and 37 women) with 61.2 ± 10.9 (mean ± SD) years, were studied and had PTH levels measured with two different methods using the same immunochemiluminescent assay plataf

16. Primary Hyperparathyroidism: The Influence of Bone Marrow Adipose Tissue on Bone Loss and of Osteocalcin on Insulin Resistance
OBJECTIVES: Bone marrow adipose tissue has been associated with low bone mineral density. However, no data exist regarding marrow adipose tissue in primary hyperparathyroidism, a disorder associated with bone loss in conditions of high bone turnover. The objective of the present study was to investigate the relationship between marrow adipose tissue, bone m

18. Association between atypical parathyroid adenoma and neurofibromatosis
Primary hyperparathyroidism is a disease characterized by excessive production of parathyroid hormone (PTH), which is due to a parathyroid adenoma in 85% of cases. An atypical parathyroid adenoma, with some histopathological features of parathyroid carcinoma, may be found in some of the cases, although it may not fulfill all the criteria for this diagnosis.

19. Regression of orbital brown tumor after surgical removal of parathyroid adenoma
Brown tumors are rare skeletal manifestations that occur in less than 2% of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) cases. Even rarer is the occurrence of brown tumor of the orbit, and few cases have been reported around the world. The rare instance of this benign tumor has prompted us to report the case and treatment of an orbital brown tumor in a patient with P

20. The key role of 99mTc-MIBI SPECT/CT in the diagnosis of parathyroid adenoma: a case report
The concomitant occurrence of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) due to parathyroid adenoma and papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is not common. The co-occurrence of parathyroid tumors and thyroid diseases can lead to misdiagnosis owing to mutual interference of imaging in the early period of disease. The most commonly used imaging techniques for the preoper

21. Is local resection sufficient for parathyroid carcinoma?
OBJECTIVES: Parathyroid carcinoma is a rare malignant disease of the parathyroid glands that appears in less than 1% of patients with primary hyperparathyroidism. In the literature, the generally recommended treatment is en bloc tumor excision with ipsilateral thyroid lobectomy. Based on our 12 years of experience, we discuss the necessity of performing thy

22. Is Primary Hyperparathyroidism a Risk Factor for Papillary Thyroid Cancer? An Exemplar Study and Literature Review
Introduction Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is associated with several cancer types, including papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). Objective To explore further the relation between PHPT and PTC.
Methods By considering patients with PHPT as extra-suspicious for PTC, we studied an exemplar group of pati

23. Association of primary hyperparathyroidism and humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy in a patient with clear cell renal carcinoma
Hypercalcemia is found frequently in patients with cancer. Besides the etiology related to the malignancy, other causes should be considered in the differential diagnostic, as primary hyperparathyroidism, granulomatous diseases and the use of thiazide diuretics. We present a case report of a severe hypercalcemia due to a rare association and review the relev

24. Primary hyperparathyroidism in multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1: when to perform surgery?
Primary hyperparathyroidism is a common endocrinological disorder. In rare circumstances, it is associated with familial syndromes, such as multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1. This syndrome is caused by a germline mutation in the multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 gene encoding the tumor-suppressor protein menin. Usually, primary hyperparathyroidism is the
