1. Adding value to polystyrene waste by chemically transforming it into sulfonated polystyrene
ABSTRACT Polystyrene (PS), one of the most used polymers in everyday life, has a low recycling rate due to its inexpensive virgin resin. In order to make polystyrene waste (WPS) recycling advantageous, it is possible to change it chemically, introducing heteroatoms in the polymer chain thus transforming the waste into a material with more added value. In thi

2. Influência dos polieletrólitos na resposta eletroquímica de filmes automontados contendo nanotubos de carbono para aplicação em nanomedicina / Influence the polyelectrolytes on the electrochemical response of layer-by-layer films containing carbon nanotubes for applications in nanomedicine
Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) are cylindrical carbon nanostructures exhibiting excellent electrical, thermal, optical and mechanical properties. The immobilization of CNTs in nanostructured thin films in conjunction with polymers using the Layer-by-Layer (LbL) technique provides a new alternative for development of nanocomposites to be used as sensors and biosenso

Ent

5. Fabricação e caracterização de dispositivos poliméricos emissores de luz com camada ativa de poli(2-metóxi, 5-(2-etil-hexilóxi)-1,4-fenileno vinileno) (MEH-PPV) / Fabrication and characterization of polymer light-emitting diodes with active layer composed by poly(2-methoxy, 5-(2-etil-hexilhoxy)-1,4-phenilene vinilene) (MEH-PPV).
Polymer light emitting diodes (PLEDs) have been widely investigated as candidate materials for display fabrication. The main advantages exhibited by PLEDs are the low-cost processing and possibility of large-area display fabrication, in comparison to the conventional liquid crystal displays (LCDs). Although the engineering aspects concerning device fabricati

7. Synthesis in pilot plant scale and physical properties of sulfonated polystyrene

A tensiometric detector based on surface tension measurement by the drop-weight method (TSDMG) was built and fitted in a standard liquid chromatograph (together with an UV photometric detector) to monitor surfactants in a liquid flow by dynamic surface tension (gd) measurements. The gd values obtained for aqueous solutions of polyethylene glycol mono [p-1,1,

9. Influence of substratum hydration and adsorbed macromolecules on bacterial attachment to surfaces.
The attachment of Pseudomonas fluorescens and an Acinetobacter sp. to hydrogel and polystyrene surfaces was investigated to evaluate the influence of adsorbed water and macromolecules on adhesion. With both organisms, there was a decrease in attachment numbers with increasing water content of the hydrogels. There was also a decrease in attachment with a decr

10. In vitro surface properties of the newly recognized gastric pathogen Helicobacter pylori.
There appears to be a particular association between Helicobacter pylori and the gastric antrum, but the mechanisms by which the organism adheres to and colonizes the gastric mucosa are unclear. Surface hydrophobicity and surface charge mediate the adherence of other bacterial pathogens to mucosal epithelial cell surfaces. Therefore, in this study we charact

11. Papillomavirus Microbicidal Activities of High-Molecular-Weight Cellulose Sulfate, Dextran Sulfate, and Polystyrene Sulfonate
The high-molecular-weight sulfated or sulfonated polysaccharides or polymers cellulose sulfate, dextran sulfate, and polystyrene sulfonate were tested for microbicidal activity against bovine papillomavirus type 1 (BPV-1) and human papillomavirus type 11 (HPV-11) and type 40 (HPV-40). In vitro assays included the BPV-1-induced focus-forming assay and transie

12. A chemical model for the cooperation of sulfates and carboxylates in calcite crystal nucleation: Relevance to biomineralization
Acidic matrix macromolecules involved in regulation of biological crystal growth often contain aspartic acid-rich domains and covalently bound sulfated polysaccharides. We propose that sulfates and β-sheet structured carboxylates cooperate in oriented calcite crystal nucleation. The sulfates concentrate calcium, creating the supersaturation necessary for nu
