13. Investigation of Enteric Viruses in the Feces of Neotropical Migratory Birds Captured on the Coast of the State of Pará, Brazil
ABSTRACT Migratory birds can become long-distance vectors for a wide range of microorganisms and can cause human disease, being the Brazilian coast a gateway for northern migratory birds. These animals are considered natural reservoirs of different viruses that cause important diseases, being relevant research of viral pathogens in migratory birds to epidemi

14. BaltDC: purification, characterization and infrared spectroscopy of an antiplatelet DC protein isolated from Bothrops alternatus snake venom
Abstract Background: Snake venoms are a complex mixture of proteins, organic and inorganic compounds. Some of these proteins, enzymatic or non-enzymatic ones, are able to interact with platelet receptors, causing hemostatic disorders. The possible therapeutic potential of toxins with antiplatelet properties may arouse interest in the pharmacological areas.

15. Isolation and molecular characterization of Bacillus thuringiensis found in soils of the Cerrado region of Brazil, and their toxicity to Aedes aegypti larvae
ABSTRACT This study investigated the potential of Bacillus thuringiensis isolates obtained in the Cerrado region of the Brazilian state of Maranhão for the biological control of Aedes aegypti larvae. The isolates were obtained from soil samples and the identification of the B. thuringiensis colonies was based on morphological characteristics. Bioassays were

16. Detection, purification and characterization of a lectin from freshwater green algae Spirogyra spp.
ABSTRACT Freshwater algae are rich sources of structurally biologically active metabolites, such as fatty acids, steroids, carotenoids and polysaccharides. Among these metabolites, lectins stand out. Lectins are proteins or glycoproteins of non-immune origin which bind to carbohydrates or glycoconjugates, without changing ligand structure. Many studies have

17. Detection of Genetic Relationship in the Tree of Life of Some Quail Through Molecular Markers Analyses
ABSTRACT Quail is an important and interesting group of galliform birds. The Common quail (Coturnix coturnix); the Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica); the Panda quail (Coturnix japonica); the Dotted white quail (Coturnix japonica) and the Bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus) were used in this study. PCR-RFLP and SDS-proteins were performed to reveal the gen

18. Identification of IgE and IgG1 specific antigens in Echinococcus granulosus cyst fluid
Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is an anthropozoonotic disease with worldwide distribution and is caused by the cestode Echinococcus granulosus. Anaphylactic shock induced by CE rupture is a serious complication especially in patients with hydatid infections, as the resulting leakage of fluid contains highly toxic endogenous antigen. We aimed to isolate and ident

19. Detection and analysis of different interactions between resistance mechanisms and carbapenems in clinical isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae
Abstract Carbapenems are considered last-line agents for the treatment of serious infections caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae, and this microorganism may exhibit resistance to β-lactam antibiotics due to different mechanisms of resistance. We evaluated 27 isolates of K. pneumoniae resistant to carbapenems recovered from inpatients at the University Hospital

20. Biological and molecular properties of yellow venom of the Amazonian coral snake Micrurus surinamensis
Abstract INTRODUCTION: The coral snake Micrurus surinamensis, which is widely distributed throughout Amazonia, has a neurotoxic venom. It is important to characterize the biological and molecular properties of this venom in order to develop effective antitoxins. METHODS: Toxins from the venom of M. surinamensis were analyzed by two-dimensional polyacryla

21. Botanical and genetic characters of Erythrina × neillii cultivated in Egypt
Abstract Erythrina × neillii Mabberley & Lorence, Fabaceae, is a sterile hybrid between E. herbacea L. and E. humeana Spreng. Nothing was traced about its genetic, macro and micromorphology. Therefore, it was deemed of interest to study its botanical characters, in addition to the DNA fingerprint to help in the identification of the plant. The anatomical ch

22. Physicochemical characteristics and fibril-forming properties of collagen from paddlefish (Polyodon spathula) and globefish (Fugu flavidus) skin byproducts
Abstract Acid-soluble collagen (ASC) and pepsin-soluble collagen (PSC) from the skin byproducts of paddlefish (ASC-P and PSC-P) and globefish (ASC-G and PSC-G) were purified and characterized. The imino acid contents of ASC-P, PSC-P, ASC-G and PSC-G were 194.1, 197.9, 186.4 and 189.7 residues/1000 residues, respectively. SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresi

23. Production, Purification and Physicochemical Properties of an Exo-Polygalacturonase from Aspergillus niger SW06
In this study, exo-polygalacturonase (exo-PG) production from Aspergillus niger SW06 was optimized by central composition design and high amount of 21.51 units mL-1 could be achieved in optimizing growth conditions. Both gel filtration and ion exchange chromatography revealed a single exo-PG activity peak, and sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electr

24. Detecção de inibidores de proteases em sementes de Punica granatum
The use of plants as a way to prevent and treat disease comes from ancient times. With the increasing return on consumption of plants for medicinal purposes, the plant-based medicines have gained greater appreciation. Protease inhibitors are compounds that can decrease activity of an enzyme. They are found in plants, especially in Fabaceae, Poaceae, and Sola
