19. Surgical management of pneumothorax in cystic fibrosis.
Twenty seven adults with cystic fibrosis who had had either a surgical pleurodesis or pleurectomy for the management of pneumothorax were studied. There were no significant differences in postoperative respiratory function, incidence of recurrent pneumothorax, or incidence of major postoperative complications between the two groups.

20. Use of biological glue to control pulmonary air leaks.
Biological glue is a natural adhesive generated by the interaction between fibrinogen (pre-glue) and thrombin to produce fibrin. The pre-glue is prepared from a single donor (to avoid the problems of pooled plasma) and stored as cryoprecipitate. Before being used it is thawed, dissolved in saline, and activated into an adhesive by the addition of topical thr

21. Use of a Heimlich flutter valve for pneumothorax in cystic fibrosis.
The use of a Heimlich flutter valve in an adult patient with cystic fibrosis with hypercapnic respiratory failure which allowed resolution of a persisting pneumothorax after failure of conventional tube drainage is reported. The patient was managed at home and avoided surgical pleurodesis which could have jeopardised transplantation at a later date.

22. Life threatening chylous pleural and pericardial effusion in a patient with Behçet's syndrome.
Chylothorax and chylopericardium secondary to thrombosis of the superior vena cava and the innominate and subclavian veins were diagnosed in a patient with Behçet's syndrome. Immunosuppressive treatment, diet, and underwater seal drainage led to a diminished volume of pleural fluid and pericardial fluid and to a diminished concentration of triglyceride in t

23. Further experience of Corynebacterium parvum in malignant pleural effusion.
The outcome of drug induced pleurodesis has been evaluated in a non-randomised retrospective study of 67 patients with recurrent malignant pleural effusions treated during 1976-83. Fourteen died within 30 days of treatment. Of the remaining 53 patients, 26 studied during 1976-80 were treated with intrapleural mustine hydrochloride, while 27 studied during 19

24. Efficacy of short term versus long term tube thoracostomy drainage before tetracycline pleurodesis in the treatment of malignant pleural effusions.
BACKGROUND--A study was undertaken to compare the efficacy of short term tube thoracostomy drainage with standard tube thoracostomy drainage before instillation of tetracycline for sclerotherapy of malignant pleural effusions. METHODS--The study consisted of a randomised clinical trial in a sequential sample of 25 patients with malignant pleural effusions do
