1. THE BRAZILIAN EXPERIENCE WITH ETHANOL FUEL: ASPECTS OF PRODUCTION, USE, QUALITY AND DISTRIBUTION LOGISTICS
Abstract The reduction in the availability of fossil fuel increased the search for alternative fuel sources (for example, ethanol). In the Brazilian market, light duty vehicles can be fueled with gasohol (18 up to 27.5 %v/v of anhydrous ethanol in gasoline) and/or hydrous ethanol. To minimize the risk of water-induced phase separation of gasoline-ethanol ble

2. Principal environmental impacts on pipeline tracks as a result of mining operations and their mitigated actions
Abstract This study deals with the main environmental impacts and possible mitigation measures for many pipeline tracks, due to the mining of different substances in areas of interference between mining activities and mineral research and those resulting from construction and gas pipeline operation. By monitoring the identified interferences/disturbances, it

3. Detection and on-line prediction of leak magnitude in a gas pipeline using an acoustic method and neural network data processing
Considering the importance of monitoring pipeline systems, this work presents the development of a technique to detect gas leakage in pipelines, based on an acoustic method, and on-line prediction of leak magnitude using artificial neural networks. On-line audible noises generated by leakage were obtained with a microphone installed in a 60 m long pipeline.

4. FLEXIBLE RISERS MONITORING TECHNIQUE BASED ON VIBRATION MEASUREMENTS / MONITORAMENTO DE RISERS FLEXÍVEIS ATRAVÉS DE TÉCNICA BASEADA EM VIBRAÇÕES
The main failure in flexible risers is the disruption of the wires from the tensile armor layer. Experience has shown that this class of damage occurs primarily near to the top riser connector. The breaking of the wires occurs gradually and may be caused by different processes as corrosion by inflow of fluid in the annular space, excessive wear associated wi

5. Proposta de algoritmo para detecção de vazamentos em oleodutos utilizando análise freqüencial de sinais de pressão
Pipeline leak detection is a matter of great interest for companies who transport petroleum and its derivatives, in face of rising exigencies of environmental policies in industrialized and industrializing countries. However, existing technologies are not yet fully consolidated and many studies have been accomplished in order to achieve better levels of sens

6. Monitoring fails in tubes using signals digital processing / Sistema de monitoramento de falhas em tubulações por meio de processamento digital de sinais
Natural gas has hazardous contaminants that, besides being corrosive, compromise the quality for the consumption. For in such a way the present residual water condensation in the gas can start a local corrosive process, which could cause damage to the structure of the gas ducts. Due to the great length of a gas duct, corrosive components decrease its quality

7. Water losses in public water network supply : diagnostic, control and reduction method by the geographic information system / Perdas fisicas de agua em sistemas de abastecimento : metodo de diagnostico, controle e redução atraves de sistema de informações geograficas
Nowadays, the water for human consumption has been adding social and economic considerable values, due to its strategic relationship between the increasing demand in detriment to the offer, tending to scarcity, mainly in the big centers, so the occurrence of high levels of physical losses, in the water supply system (WSS), has become a great problem to be fa

8. A MULTI-AGENT SYSTEM FOR REAL TIME MONITORING AND DATA ACQUISITION / UM SISTEMA MULTI-AGENTES PARA MONITORAMENTO E AQUISIÇÃO EM TEMPO REAL
Supervisory systems allied to embedded software, a common subject in the literature, are responsible by the supervision of equipments like industrial machines, household-electric devices, cellular phones and PDAs. Many of them have severe requisites of fault tolerance and reliability as well as real time systems features. This research investigates the use o

9. Characterization of Microbial Communities in Gas Industry Pipelines
Culture-independent techniques, denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis, and random cloning of 16S rRNA gene sequences amplified from community DNA were used to determine the diversity of microbial communities in gas industry pipelines. Samples obtained from natural gas pipelines were used directly for DNA extraction, inoculated into sulfate-

10. A dynamic, web-accessible resource to process raw microarray scan data into consolidated gene expression values: importance of replication
We propose a freely accessible web-based pipeline, which processes raw microarray scan data to obtain experimentally consolidated gene expression values. The tool MADSCAN, which stands for MicroArray Data Suites of Computed ANalysis, makes a practical choice among the numerous methods available for filtering, normalizing and scaling of raw microarray express

11. Examination and characterization of distribution system biofilms.
Investigations concerning the role of distribution system biofilms on water quality were conducted at a drinking water utility in New Jersey. The utility experienced long-term bacteriological problems in the distribution system, while treatment plant effluents were uniformly negative for coliform bacteria. Results of a monitoring program showed increased col
