16. Growth of a Mixed Species Lactic Starter in a Continuous “pH-Stat” Fermentor
Optimum growth conditions for mixed species starter FDs 0172 in skim milk, whey medium, and tryptone medium at 25 C in a “pH-stat” continuous fermentor were investigated. Specific growth rate and productivity were found to be influenced both by the medium and the pH value. Highest productivity was found in skim milk medium between pH 5.5 and 5.9. Lactic

17. Initiation of liver growth by tumor necrosis factor: Deficient liver regeneration in mice lacking type I tumor necrosis factor receptor
The mechanisms that initiate liver regeneration after resection of liver tissue are not known. To determine whether cytokines are involved in the initiation of liver growth, we studied the regeneration of the liver after partial hepatectomy (PH) in mice lacking type I tumor necrosis factor receptor (TNFR-I). DNA synthesis after PH was severely impaired

18. The effect of theophylline on intestinal bicarbonate transport measured by pH stat in Amphiuma.
1. The influence of theophylline on the mucosa to serosa and serosa to mucosa fluxes of HCO3- were measured by the pH stat technique in isolated segments of proximal small intestine from Amphiuma maintained under short-circuited conditions. The mucosal or serosal fluid was exposed to media containing 25 mM-HCO3- (pH 7.4) while the pH of unbuffered media in t

19. Characterization of eight beta-lactamases of Gram-negative bacteria.
Eight kinds of beta-lactamases produced by gram-negative bacteria were characterized by the following properties: molecular weight, isoelectric point, pH optimum, molecular activity, immunochemical reactivity, and kinetic parameters with respect to twelve kinds of common beta-lactam antibiotics. These beta-lactamases included two types of penicillinases medi

20. Characteristics of Hydrogen Ion Transport in Urinary Bladder of Water Turtle*
The mechanism of acidification by the urinary bladder of the water turtle was studied in an in vitro system which permitted control and measurement of electrical and concentration driving forces. The rate of hydrogen ion secretion was measured by means of a pH stat technique in the absence of exogenous carbon dioxide and bicarbonate.

21. Expression of suppressors of cytokine signaling during liver regeneration
The cytokines TNF and IL-6 play a critical role early in liver regeneration following partial hepatectomy (PH). Since IL-6 activates signal transducers and activators of transcription (STATs), we examined whether the suppressors of cytokine signaling (SOCS) may be involved in terminating IL-6 signaling. We show here that SOCS-3 mRNA is induced 40-fold 2 hour

22. Immunogical Study of Anti-Beta-Lactamase Antibodies by Acidimetric Methods
A beta-lactamase was extracted from an Escherichia coli K-12 strain carrying the R-TEM plasmid and has been purified by affinity chromatography. Antisera to this enzyme were prepared in the rabbit, and the enzyme-antibody neutralization reaction has been evaluated with acidimetric methods (pH stat or pH meter). Under defined experimental conditions, it is no

23. Electrostatic potential modulations on polynucleotides as a function of ionic content: potentiometric determinations.
pK values of ionisation of cytidine residues, in poly C and poly I. poly C, have been determined by potentiometric titration as a function of either ionic strength (Na+) or Mg2+ concentration. The results are interpreted as a consequence of the existence of a local pH, prevailing in the vicinity of the polynucleotides, smaller than that of the bulk solution.

24. Effect of pH on the production of the Kanagawa hemolysin by Vibrio parahaemolyticus.
Production of the Kanagawa hemolysin by patient strains of Vibrio parahaemolyticus was found to respond to the pH rather than to the type of carbohydrate present in the growth medium. Regardless of the carbohydrate present, hemolysin production in peptone broth cultures occurred only when the pH was between 6.5 and 5.5. Mannitol, the sugar used in the Wagats
