25. Identification of staphylococcal Panton-Valentine leukocidin as a potent dermonecrotic toxin.
The Panton-Valentine leukocidin of Staphylococcus aureus was shown to exhibit a potent dermonecrotic effect when injected intradermally into rabbits. This effect could be abrogated by immunizing animals with the F component or both components, but immunization with the S component appeared to exacerbate certain of the intradermal responses.

26. Breast Milk Transmission of a Panton-Valentine Leukocidin-Producing Staphylococcus aureus Strain Causing Infantile Pneumonia
We report on a 38-day-old infant who developed pleuropneumonia due to a Staphylococcus aureus strain responsible for familial furunculosis, which was acquired by maternal breast-feeding. All isolates from the infant and parents were genetically related by randomly amplified polymorphic DNA analysis and produced Panton-Valentine leukocidin.

27. Community-Acquired Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Isolated in Switzerland Contains the Panton-Valentine Leukocidin or Exfoliative Toxin Genes
Among 10 strains of community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) isolated in 2002 from patients with skin infections, seven harbored the Panton-Valentine leukocidin gene, two harbored the exfoliative toxin A gene, and one harbored neither of these genes. CA-MRSA isolates producing a variety of exotoxins are currently spreading in

30. A haemagglutination test for anti-Panton-Valentine leucocidin in serum: an interim report on 200 cases
The test is an application of the method originally described by Boyden (1951) and adapted by Stavitsky and Arquilla (1958). Sera which contain anti-Panton-Valentine leucocidin agglutinate the prepared red cells, often to a very high dilution, and this has provided a useful serological test for the diagnosis of staphylococcal disease in orthopaedic lesions.

34. Panton-Valentine leucocidin and gamma-hemolysin from Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 49775 are encoded by distinct genetic loci and have different biological activities.
Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 49775 produces three proteins recognized by affinity-purified antibodies against the S component of Panton-Valentine leucocidin (LukS-PV) and two proteins recognized by affinity-purified antibodies against the F component of this toxin (LukF-PV). Purification of these proteins and cloning of the corresponding genes provided evidenc
