1. Latent class profile of psychiatric symptoms and treatment utilization in a sample of patients with co-occurring disorders
Objective: To identify symptom-based subgroups within a sample of patients with co-occurring disorders (CODs) and to analyze intersubgroup differences in mental health services utilization. Methods: Two hundred and fifteen patients with COD from an addiction clinic completed the Symptom Checklist 90-Revised. Subgroups were determined using latent class pro

2. Modelagem estatística de extremos espaciais com base em processos max-stable aplicados a dados meteorológicos no estado do Paraná / Statistical modelling of spatial extremes based on max-stable processes applied to environmental data in the Parana State
The most mathematical models developed for rare events are based on probabilistic models for extremes. Although the tools for statistical modeling of univariate and multivariate extremes are well-developed, the extension of these tools to model spatial extremes data is currently a very active area of research. Modeling of maximum values under the spatial dom

3. Análise da diversidade genética e evolução molecular de Infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) / Analysis of genetic diversity and molecular evolution of Infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV)
Infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) is considered one of the most important pathogens for chickens of the poultry industry. Considering the differences in levels of virulence among isolates of IBDV, this paper proposes a non-arbitrary genotyping definition and a unified nomenclature for the viral isolates of IBDV. In this approach, the sets of 96 VP2 and

4. A methodological approach for the construction of a radiation hybrid map of bovine chromosome 5
A bovine 5,000 rad WG-RH panel was used to construct an RH map of bovine chromosome 5 (BTA5). Twenty-one microsatellites and thirteen genes were scored in the panel using PAGE and radioactive labeling. Marker retention ranged from 8.9%-25.8% and averaged 17.8%. Pairwise locus analysis placed all markers in a single syntenic group with a LOD support of 4.0. A

5. Genetic epidemiology of fecal egg excretion during Schistosoma mansoni infection in an endemic area in Minas Gerais, Brazil
There is considerable variation in the level of fecal egg excretion during Schistosoma mansoni infections. Within a single endemic area, the distribution of egg counts is typically overdispersed, with the majority of eggs excreted coming from a minority of residents. The purpose of this study was to quantify the influence of genetic factors on patterns of fe

6. Frequency-Dependent Selection: The High Potential for Permanent Genetic Variation in the Diallelic, Pairwise Interaction Model
A detailed analytic and numerical study is made of the potential for permanent genetic variation in frequency-dependent models based on pairwise interactions among genotypes at a single diallelic locus. The full equilibrium structure and qualitative gene-frequency dynamics are derived analytically for a symmetric model, in which pairwise fitnesses are chiefl

7. Likelihood Analysis of Recombinational Disequilibrium in Multiple-Locus Gametic Frequencies
Likelihood methods are developed for the estimation and testing of multiple-locus gametic disequilibria, using log-linear models of parametric effects. The estimates of disquilibrium are related to Kimura's Z-measure, and may be extended to multiple alleles and multiple loci. Likelihood ratio test criteria are constructed, which are asymptotically distribute

8. Patterns of Nucleotide Substitution in Mitochondrial Protein Coding Genes of Vertebrates
Maximum likelihood methods were used to study the differences in substitution rates among the four nucleotides and among different nucleotide sites in mitochondrial protein-coding genes of vertebrates. In the 1st+2nd codon position data, the frequency of nucleotide G is negatively correlated with evolutionary rates of genes, substitution rates vary substanti

9. Integration of Microbial Ecology and Statistics: a Test To Compare Gene Libraries
Libraries of 16S rRNA genes provide insight into the membership of microbial communities. Statistical methods help to determine whether differences in library composition are artifacts of sampling or are due to underlying differences in the communities from which they are derived. To contribute to a growing statistical framework for comparing 16S rRNA librar

10. Rates of nucleotide substitution in sexual and anciently asexual rotifers
The class Bdelloidea of the phylum Rotifera is the largest well studied eukaryotic taxon in which males and meiosis are unknown, and the only one for which these indications of ancient asexuality are supported by cytological and molecular genetic evidence. We estimated the rates of synonymous and nonsynonymous substitutions in the hsp82 heat shock gene

11. Improvements to GALA and dbERGE II: databases featuring genomic sequence alignment, annotation and experimental results
We describe improvements to two databases that give access to information on genomic sequence similarities, functional elements in DNA and experimental results that demonstrate those functions. GALA, the database of Genome ALignments and Annotations, is now a set of interlinked relational databases for five vertebrate species, human, chimpanzee, mouse, rat a

12. Streptococcus suis Serotypes Characterized by Analysis of Chaperonin 60 Gene Sequences
Streptococcus suis is an important pathogen of swine which occasionally infects humans as well. There are 35 serotypes known for this organism, and it would be desirable to develop rapid methods methods to identify and differentiate the strains of this species. To that effect, partial chaperonin 60 gene sequences were determined for the 35 serotype reference
