1. Relationship of ventilatory inefficiency and low cardiorespiratory fitness in the elderly: a retrospective observational study

Objective: This study evaluated the physical abilities and structural and functional alterations in the hearts of obese patients submitted to bariatric surgery with resulting significant reduction of weight. Method: 43 adult obese patients were submitted to electrocardiogram, ergometric test and ecodopplercardiogram; of the subjects, 31 were females ( 72,1%

3. Projeto e desenvolvimento de um dispositivo de avaliação do rolamento do pe de idosos durante a marcha / Projecting and developing a device to feet roll-over gait evaluation in aged people
Feet roll-over is fundamental to assure an efficient human gait but aging brings body system s alterations that cause modifications in gait s feet roll-over and diminishes gait s efficiency. This work s proposal was to elaborate and develop a device in order to simultaneously acquire e record plantar load distribution during gait and to give sound stimuli th

4. Prevalence and aetiology of cataract in Punjab.
Three districts in the Punjab plains were surveyed in 1976-7 for senile cataract and potential risk factors. The prevalence of senile cataract was 15.3% among 1269 persons examined who were aged 30 ang older, and 4.3% for all ages. These figures confirmed previous reports of high prevalence. The prevalence was 1% for ages 30-49 and increased markedly in the

5. Epidemiology of blindness and visual impairment in the kingdom of Tonga.
Data on the prevalence and causes of blindness and visual impairment in Polynesians are not readily available nor are they population based. This survey was designed to obtain an accurate estimate of blindness and its causes in Tonga. A sample of 4056 persons, aged 20 years and over, was selected by stratified cluster sampling. Participants received a screen

6. Leukocyte Telomere Length Is Not Associated With BMD, Osteoporosis, or Fracture in Older Adults: Results From the Health, Aging and Body Composition Study
Short leukocyte telomere length (TL), low BMD, and osteoporosis have been associated with increased inflammation. Previous reports suggest an association between TL, BMD, and osteoporosis in women. We sought to verify these associations and to determine whether TL is related to fracture in a cohort of older men and women. Participants included 2750 community

7. Effect of fluconazole on pharmacokinetics of 2',3'-dideoxyinosine in persons seropositive for human immunodeficiency virus.
Fluconazole inhibits cytochrome P-450-mediated enzymatic metabolism of several drugs. Since hepatic metabolism is partially responsible for 2',3'-dideoxyinosine (didanosine or ddI) elimination, fluconazole therapy may lead to increased ddI concentrations in serum and subsequent concentration-dependent adverse effects. The purpose of this study was to determi

8. Immune Responses to Specific Antigens of Streptococcus pneumoniae and Moraxella catarrhalis in the Respiratory Tract
Streptococcus pneumoniae and Moraxella catarrhalis are two common respiratory pathogens, colonizing as many as 54 and 72% of children, respectively, by 1 year of age. The immune responses to surface protein A of S. pneumoniae (PspA) and the high-molecular-weight outer membrane protein of M. catarrhalis (UspA) in the sera of various age groups in the general

9. Human antibody to influenza C virus: its age-related distribution and distinction from receptor analogs.
Sera from persons of four age groups (1 to 2 years, 2 to 5 years, 20 to 30 years, and 65 to 85 years) were analyzed for hemagglutination inhibition (HI) activity for influenza C virus. Significant HI activity was found in 66% of the 237 sera tested, and titers ranged from 8 to 512. In the yoiung adult group, 96% had antibody and the highest mean titer (74.7)

10. Cloning and sequence analysis of a gene encoding a 67-kilodalton myosin-cross-reactive antigen of Streptococcus pyogenes reveals its similarity with class II major histocompatibility antigens.
The group A streptococcal sequela acute rheumatic fever (ARF) has been associated with immunological cross-reactivity between streptococcal and heart proteins. To identify Streptococcus pyogenes genes that encode a myosin cross-reactive antigen(s) recognized by ARF sera, a genomic library from an emm deletion strain (T28/51/4) was screened with a single ARF
