1. Design of distributed optical-fiber raman amplifiers using multi-objective particle swarm optimization
A novel method is presented to design the configuration of pumping lasers of Raman amplifiers using a multi-objective particle swarm optimizer. The goal is to obtain the pump laser wavelengths and powers that maximize the amplifier on-off gain, while maintaining the flatness of the gain over the used bandwidth. We used an algorithm called Multiple Objective

3. Desenvolvimento de um laser de Nd:YLF bombeado por diodo laser e duplicado em frequencia para 657 nm / Development of a diode pumped Nd:YLF laser, frency doubled to 657 nm
Atomic clocks are used today in a number of scientific and technological applications, ranging from tests of relativity, or variations of fundamental constants, to the use in navigation and telecommunication. The next generation of such high precision devices will be based on optical transitions of suitable laser cooled and trapped atoms. In this work we des

4. Construção de uma armadilha magneto-ótica para aplicações em informação quântica e física atômica / Construction of a Magnet-Optical Trap for Aplications at Quantum Information and Atomic Physics
We built a magneto-optical trap (MOT) for rubidium as a first step for the trapping of a cloud of cold atoms in a periodic potential formed by light beams. This system will be used for experiments in atom physics, with possible applications in quantum information. A MOT is necessary to avoid the problems imposed by the thermal agitation of the atoms to the m

5. AmplificaÃÃo Raman de pulsos curtos em fibras Ãpticas com ganho periÃdico / Raman amplification of short pulses in optical fibers with periodic gain
Optical Amplifiers amplify incident light through stimulated emission, the same mechanism which is used by lasers. Indeed, an optical amplifier, it is not but a laser without feedback. Its main ingredient is optical gain which is realized when the amplifier is under pumping process (optically or electrically) in order to cause population inversion at electro

6. Geração de supercontínuo em fibra óptica de cristal fotônico com núcleo de água
Photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) are optical fibers whose core is surrounded by a regular matrix of holes that is responsible for light confinement and guidance. This new architecture opens new perspectives in the development of nonlinear applications, many of which are based upon the high efficiency with which nonlinearity-driven spectral broadening known sup

7. Multicolor Quantum Correlations in the Optical Parametric Oscillator / Correlações quânticas multicolores no oscilador paramétrico ótico
We have investigated the collective quantum properties of the three bright light beams produced by an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) operating above threshold, named pump, signal, and idler. We have analyzed experimentally their intensity and phase quantum fluctuations, and how they are correlated. For the first time, we have observed the existence of p

8. Produção e caraterização de materiais vítreos de germanato com nanopartículas metálicas e íons de érbio para aplicações em fotônica. / Production and characterization of germanate glasses with metallic nanoparticles and erbium ions for photonic applications.
This work presents the preparation and investigation of the luminescent properties of PbO-GeO2 and PbO-GeO2-Ga2O3 vitreous systems, doped with Erbium ions and containing silver, gold and copper metallic nanoparticles (NPs), for applications in photonic devices. These glasses have a large transmission window (400-4500nm), high refractive index (~1,9) and low

9. TÃcnicas de Interferometria Ãptica aplicada à medicina, odontologia e comunicaÃÃes Ãpticas
In the work described in this thesis, we used two different interferometric techniques, the coherent optical frequency domain reflectometry (COFDR), and the optical coherence tomography (OCT). Both techniques are based on the Michelson interferometer. They were applied to optical communications and to medical and dentistry imaging. We will give a general des

10. "Multivariate calibration and differential kinetic analysis in flow systems with spectrophotometric detection" / "Calibração multivariada e cinética diferencial em sistemas de análises em fluxo com detecção espectrofotométrica"
Differential kinetic analysis can be implemented in a flow system analyser, and this was demonstrated in designing an improved spectrophotometric catalytic determination of iron and vanadium in Fe-V alloys. The method relied on the influence of Fe2+ and VO2+ on the rate of the iodide oxidation by Cr2O7 under acidic conditions; therefore the Jones reductor wa

11. Caracterização espectroscópica de possíveis meios ativos para lasers de Nd3+ e Tm3+ / Spectroscopic characterization of possible Nd3+ and Tm3+ laser active media
In this work we have made an important contribution to the growing research of new laser materials that can be pumped by low cost diode lasers or by the Upconversion process to operate in the near-infrared and visible spectral regions. Three kinds of hosts, doped with the rare earth ions (Nd3+ and Tm3+) were studied, and they present potential characteristic

12. Fiber coupled cholesteric liquid crystal laser
Lasing in cholesteric liquid crystals is an exciting new phenomenon. Cholesteric liquid crystals (CLC) are inherently periodic. In their ground state, they form a structure where the optic axis of the uniaxial material twists to form a helix and leads to one dimensional photonic band-gap behavior. If a fluorescent dye with emission matching the reflection ba
