1. The effect of the inner cylinder rotation on the fluid dynamics of non-Newtonian fluids in concentric and eccentric annuli
Helical flow in an annular space occurs during oil drilling operations. The correct prediction of flow of drilling fluid in an annular space between the wellbore wall and the drill pipe is essential to determine the variation in fluid pressure within the wellbore. This paper presents experimental and CFD simulation results of the pressure drop in the flow of

2. Métodos com passo temporal adaptativo para a simulação de escoamentos com superfícies livres / Adaptative time-step methods for the simulation of free surface flows
The simulation of free surfaces flows has gained importance in the recent years due to the many practical applications of this type of flow. Among the many numerical methods available for the simulation of fluid flows, there is GENSMAC, which is a numerical technique to simulate Newtonian flows with free surfaces. The implementation of semi-implicitmethods f

3. Numerical experimental comparison of dam break flows with non-Newtonian fluids
The dam-break flow involving non-Newtonian fluids is a type of flow commonly observed in nature as well as in common industrial processes. Experiments of non-Newtonian dam-break flows were conducted in horizontal channels and aqueous solutions of Carbopol 940 were used, which were modeled by the Herschel-Bulkley constitutive equation. Their flows were filmed

4. NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF THE FLOW OF EMULSION THROUGH STRAIGHT AND CONSTRICTED CAPILLARIES / ANÁLISE NUMÉRICA DO ESCOAMENTO DE EMULSÕES ATRAVÉS DE CAPILARES RETOS E CAPILARES COM GARGANTA
Emulsion can be used as a mobility control agent in enhanced oil recovery methods in order to achieve a more efficient sweep of the reservoir. The application of such technique requires full understanding of how emulsions flow in a porous material. The macroscopic flow behavior can be determined based on the pore scale flow, at which emulsions cannot be trea

5. Escoamento de fluidos complexos e transporte de partÃculas em geometrias irregulares. / Complex fluid flows and particle transport in irregular geometries.
In this work many types of incompressible laminar Newtonian and Non-Newtonian flows are studied. The interplay of these flows with complex geometries was investigated using computational modeling and numerical solution of the conservation of momentum and mass continuity equations. As a first step, the computational modeling of a network of pores was adopted

6. High-order finite volume method for solving viscoelastic fluid flows
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is widely used by polymer processing industries in order to evaluate polymeric fluid flows. A successful computational code must provide reliable predictions (modeling) in a fast and efficient way (simulation). In this work, a new approach to solve the governing equations of viscoelastic fluid flows is proposed. It is based

7. LIQUID-LIQUID DISPLACEMENT FLOWS IN A HELE-SHAW CELL INCLUDING NON-NEWTONIAN EFFECTS / DESLOCAMENTO DE LÍQUIDOS EM CÉLULA DE HELE-SHAW CONSIDERANDO EFEITOS NÃO NEWTONIANOS
This work studied the displacement of fluids in porous media using a Hele-Shaw cell. Specifically, was investigated experimentally the displacement of a non-Newtonian fluid by a Newtonian in a rectangular Hele-Shaw cell. The Saffman-Taylor or viscous fingering instability occurs when one fluid pushes a more viscous one, and a Hele-Shaw is a convenient tool t

8. Forced convection to laminar flow of liquid egg yolk in circular and annular ducts
The steady-state heat transfer in laminar flow of liquid egg yolk - an important pseudoplastic fluid food - in circular and concentric annular ducts was experimentally investigated. The average convection heat transfer coefficients, determined by measuring temperatures before and after heating sections with constant temperatures at the tube wall, were used t

9. Aspects of finite element and finite volume equivalence and a posteriori error estimation in polymer melt flow
In this work, aspects of discretization errors associated with finite volume (FV) and equivalent finite element (FE) modelling strategies are discussed within the framework of polymer melt flow. The computational approaches are based on the generalized Newtonian model in conjunction with Cross constitutive equation. The numerical examples illustrate one and

10. Generalized Integral Transform Solution for hydrodynamically developing non-Newtonian flows in circular tubes
The Generalized Integral Transform Technique (GITT) is applied to the solution of the momentum equations in a hydrodynamically developing laminar flow of a non-Newtonian power-law fluid inside a circular duct. A primitive variables formulation is adopted in order to avoid the singularity of the auxiliary eigenvalue problem in terms of Bessel functions at the

11. A finite element formulation for pseudoplastic flows / Uma formulação de elementos finitos para problemas de escoamentos pseudoplásticos
In this thesis, a stabilized mixed finite element formulation is presented, with continuous velocity and discontinuous pressure interpolations, for incompressible flow problems of pseudoplastic dominated non-Newtonian fluids. Difficulties in constructing approximations by classical formulations are discussed and numerical results are also presented for them.
