37. Restriction-modification systems in Mycoplasma spp
Restriction and Modification (R-M) systems are present in all Mycoplasma species sequenced so far. The presence of these genes poses barriers to gene transfer and could protect the cell against phage infections. The number and types of R-M genes between different Mycoplasma species are variable, which is characteristic of a polymorphism. The majority of the

38. Avaliação clínica e estudo da ocorrência de fêmeas ovinas infectadas por micoplasmas na região de Piedade - SP - "Avaliação da infecção sobre a produtividade do rebanho" / Clinical avaliation and ocurrence studies of mycoplasmas infected ovine female in the Piedade region - State of São Paulo- "Avaliation of the infection in the productivity of the herd"
Sheep industry is growing rapidly in Brazil. However many diseases are the principal bottleneck to the increasing these activities. Among the reproductive diseases the vulvo-vaginites caused by Mycoplasma play an important role. Although no studies has been carried out in brazilian sheep herd so far. For that 60 ewes were ramdomly from different flocks selec

39. Detecção da infecção de rotavírus e levantamento soroepidemiológico de alguns patógenos com potencial zoonótico em avestruzes (Struthio camelus) no Estado do Paraná / Detection of rotavirus infection and serosurvey of some pathogens with zoonotic potential in ostriches (Struthio camelus) in Paraná State

42. Prevalencia de microorganismos asociados a secreción genital femenina, Argentina
OBJECTIVE: There was a significant increase in the number of women demanding gynecological care in public hospital of the Great Buenos Aires, Argentina, between 1997 and1998. It was necessary to update the prevalence of associated microorganisms in order to review the laboratory support and adjust prevention and control guidelines. METHODS: Samples from vagi

43. Tetracycline-resistant Mycoplasma hominis strains contain streptococcal tetM sequences.
Clinical isolates of Mycoplasma hominis resistant to high levels of tetracycline contained DNA sequences homologous to the streptococcal tetracycline determinant, tetM. In contrast, none of the susceptible M. hominis isolates tested carried this determinant. This is the first description of tetM in an unrelated genus and suggests the spread of tetM from Stre

44. Isolation of Mycoplasma species and Ureaplasma urealyticum from obstetrical and gynecological patients by using commercially available medium formulations.
One hundred duplicate endocervical specimens from obstetrical and gynecological patients were cultured for Mycoplasma spp. and Ureaplasma urealyticum. Rates of recovery of these organisms from commercially prepared A7 medium and the Mycotrim-GU system were compared. We detected 14 (93%) of the total 15 isolates of Mycoplasma spp. on A7 plates and 11 (73%) in

45. P48 Major Surface Antigen of Mycoplasma agalactiae Is Homologous to a malp Product of Mycoplasma fermentans and Belongs to a Selected Family of Bacterial Lipoproteins
A major surface antigenic lipoprotein of Mycoplasma agalactiae, promptly recognized by the host's immune system, was characterized. The mature product, P48, showed significant similarity and shared conserved amino acid motifs with lipoproteins or predicted lipoproteins from Mycoplasma fermentans, Mycoplasma hyorhinis, relapsing fever Borrelia spp., Bacillus

46. Interaction of albumin and phospholipid:cholesterol liposomes in growth of Mycoplasma spp.
Mycoplasma spp., sterol and fatty acid auxotrophs, are conventionally grown in complex media containing high concentrations of serum. Serum supplies the required lipids, but its presence complicates studies on the metabolism and antigenicity of mycoplasmas as well as the membrane dynamics of these organisms. In the present work, fetal bovine serum was replac

47. DNA Gyrase and Topoisomerase IV Mutations in Clinical Isolates of Ureaplasma spp. and Mycoplasma hominis Resistant to Fluoroquinolones
Twelve clinical isolates of Ureaplasma spp. and one isolate of Mycoplasma hominis were examined for resistance to fluoroquinolones. Previously described mutations at positions 83 and 95 in GyrA (Escherichia coli numbering) and positions 80 and 87 in ParC were found. Unusual alterations were described at positions ParC 123 and 134.

48. Comparison of media for isolation of Ureaplasma urealyticum and genital Mycoplasma species.
A total of 484 frozen patient specimens originally positive for Ureaplasma urealyticum or Mycoplasma spp. or both were recultured, and the results were compared on the following media: Shepard's A7 agar, modified phenol red-urea, SP-4-urea, modified phenol red-arginine, and SP-4-arginine broths. Of 351 specimens positive for U. urealyticum, 30 (8.5%) were de
