44. Critical Evaluation of 4-Week Incubation for Fungal Cultures: Is the Fourth Week Useful?
To determine the benefit of a 4-week incubation for mycology cultures, we evaluated all positive cultures during the fourth week of incubation in a 1-year period. Of 3,855 positive mycology cultures (yeast, 82%; molds, 18%), 62 (1.6%) were positive during the fourth week (yeast, 42%; molds, 58%). Only 15 of the 62 cultures (24%) were considered clinically re

46. Evaluation of five commercially available immunodiffusion kits for detection of Coccidioides immitis and Histoplasma capsulatum antibodies.
Five commercial test kits for the serodiagnosis of coccidioidomycosis and histoplasmosis based upon immunodiffusion were evaluated. The correlation of results with the test kits in the Clinical Laboratory varied from 71 to 100% for coccidioidomycosis. The correlation for coccidioidomycosis immunodiffusion testing varied from 57 to 83% when results from the t

47. Direct Comparison of the BACTEC 9240 and BacT/ALERT 3D Automated Blood Culture Systems for Candida Growth Detection
A direct comparison of two automated blood culture systems was conducted to compare their ability to detect Candida growth. The systems evaluated were the BACTEC 9240 (Bactec) and BacT/ALERT 3D (BacT). The aerobic, anaerobic, and mycology media for each system were evaluated: Bactec Plus Aerobic/F, Plus Anaerobic/F, and Myco/F Lytic bottles,, respectively, a

48. Molecular Detection and Identification of Agents of Eumycetoma: Detailed Report of Two Cases
We describe two cases of eumycetoma in the legs. The infections could not be adequately diagnosed by classical mycology, but the causative agents were successfully identified as Madurella mycetomatis by species-specific PCR and DNA sequencing.
