1. Effects of combined training on total ghrelin and tumor necrosis factor-α in obese middle-aged men
Abstract AIMS The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of combined training (CT) on total ghrelin and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) levels in obese middle-aged individuals. METHODS Twenty two obese middle-aged men (49.32 ± 5.74 years; Body mass index: 30.88 ± 1.64 kg/m²) were randomly assigned to a combined training group (CTG, n

2. The Brief Kinesthesia test is feasible and sensitive: a study in stroke
BACKGROUND: Clinicians lack a quantitative measure of kinesthetic sense, an important contributor to sensorimotor control of the hand and arm. OBJECTIVES: The objective here was to determine the feasibility of administering the Brief Kinesthesia Test (BKT) and begin to validate it by 1) reporting BKT scores from persons with chronic stroke and a healthy

3. AvaliaÃÃo da FunÃÃo Endotelial AtravÃs da DilataÃÃo Fluxo Mediada da ArtÃria Braquial em Adolescentes no PÃs-Parto / Evaluation of function endotelial through dilataÃÃo flow mediated of the brachial artery in adolescents in the pÃs-parto.
Aims : To evaluate the endothelial function by flow mediated dilation in adolescents and to observe if there is difference among those with a history of normotensive pregnancy or with prÃ-eclampsia ( PE ) . Methodology : A total of 99 adolescents after delivery ( this interval ranged from 2 to 11 months post partum ). It was evaluated the flow mediated dila

The objective of the current research was, in a seven-meter penalty, to identify and describe some peculiarities of looking and anticipating the final position of the ball emitted by goalkeepers, as well as the relationship between them. Four participants attended 264 filmed hurls from the goalkeepers point of view, presented ramdomically in three sessions.

7. Dynamics, control and simulation of elastic space servomechanisms and manipulators.
This research results from a cooperation program between research institutes of Brazil (ITA - SÃo Josà dos Campos) and Germany (DLR - Oberpfaffenhofen). The global goal consists of three tasks: 1st) Analysisng the dynamics of elastic manipulators with emphasis for space applications. 2nd) Designing new adaptive control schemes for improving the manipulator

8. Moment arms of the muscles crossing the anatomical shoulder
The objective of the present study was to determine the instantaneous moment arms of 18 major muscle sub-regions crossing the glenohumeral joint during coronal-plane abduction and sagittal-plane flexion. Muscle moment-arm data for sub-regions of the shoulder musculature during humeral elevation are currently not available. The tendon-excursion method was use

9. Vertebral size in elderly women with osteoporosis. Mechanical implications and relationship to fractures.
Reductions in bone density are a major determinant of vertebral fractures in the elderly population. However, women have a greater incidence of fractures than men, although their spinal bone densities are comparable. Recent observations indicate that women have 20-25% smaller vertebrae than men after accounting for differences in body size. To assess whether

10. The evolving story of medical emergency teams in quality improvement
Adverse events affect approximately 3% to 12% of hospitalized patients. At least a third, but as many as half, of such events are considered preventable. Detection of these events requires investments of time and money. A report in a recent issue of Critical Care used the medical emergency team activation as a trigger to perform a prospective standardized ev

11. Elastic coupling of limb joints enables faster bipedal walking
The passive dynamics of bipedal limbs alone are sufficient to produce a walking motion, without need for control. Humans augment these dynamics with muscles, actively coordinated to produce stable and economical walking. Present robots using passive dynamics walk much slower, perhaps because they lack elastic muscles that couple the joints. Elastic propertie
