13. Elastic Moduli of Collagen Gels Can Be Predicted from Two-Dimensional Confocal Microscopy
We quantitatively compare data obtained from imaging two-dimensional slices of three-dimensional unlabeled and fluorescently labeled collagen gels with confocal reflectance microscopy (CRM) and/or confocal fluorescence microscopy (CFM). Different network structures are obtained by assembling the gels over a range of concentrations at various temperatures. Co

14. An Insight into Cell Elasticity and Load-Bearing Ability. Measurement and Theory
We have studied the elasticity and load bearing ability of plant tissue at the cellular level, using onion (Allium cepa) epidermal cells. The Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio of the cells were obtained by loading a tensile force on onion epidermal peels of different turgor pressures, and measuring the elongation and the lateral contraction of the peels. 15. Mechanical properties of the lateral cortex of mammalian auditory outer hair cells.
Mammalian auditory outer hair cells generate high-frequency mechanical forces that enhance sound-induced displacements of the basilar membrane within the inner ear. It has been proposed that the resulting cell deformation is directed along the longitudinal axis of the cell by the cortical cytoskeleton. We have tested this proposal by making direct mechanical
