1. Biodegradation of crude oil by individual bacterial strains and a mixed bacterial consortium
Three bacterial isolates identified as Alcanivorax borkumensis SK2, Rhodococcus erythropolis HS4 and Pseudomonas stutzeri SDM, based on 16S rRNA gene sequences, were isolated from crude oil enrichments of natural seawater. Single strains and four bacterial consortia designed by mixing the single bacterial cultures respectively in the following ratios: (Alcan

2. Mixed Cultures Fermentation for the Production of Poly-ß-hydroxybutyrate
Poly-ß-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) is a biodegradable intracellular microbial product produced by many bacteria and it is comparable to some of the petrochemical derived thermoplastics such as polypropylene. One of the main barriers for the commercial exploitation is the high cost of the substrate for the production of biopolymer. The utilization of mixed microbi

3. Utilization of mixed cultures as a strategy to stimulate the biosynthesis of natural products by endophytic fungi / Utilização de culturas mistas como estratégia para estimular a biossíntese de produtos naturais por fungos endofíticos
Portanto, estudar

4. Effect of soybean oil in the endosulfan persistence in the environment. / Efeito de óleo de soja na persistência de endosulfan no ambiente.
The pesticides make part of a technology that is associated to the agriculture modernization. With their generalized use many problems occur and are diagnosed, among others, the water and soil contamination. The persistence in the environment is related to their physical and chemical properties, as well to the environment that defined the transport, retentio

5. Differential Counting in Mixed Cultures with Coulter Counters
A critical comparison of Coulter, viable, and microscope counts for several mixed cultures of microorganisms has been made. This investigation shows that Coulter counting can provide reliable estimates of microbial numbers in mixed cultures. Precautions and limitations of Coulter counting in mixed cultures are discussed.

6. Degradation of polychlorinated biphenyls by mixed microbial cultures.
Three different enriched mixed cultures capable of degrading polychlorinated biphenylas were isolated from two soil samples and a river sediment, respectively. The predominant organisms found in all three mixed cultures were Alcaligenes odorans, Alcaligenes dentrificans, and an unidentified bacterium. The polychlorinated biphenyl isomers that were more water

7. Volatile Compounds Originating from Mixed Microbial Cultures on Building Materials under Various Humidity Conditions
We examined growth of mixed microbial cultures (13 fungal species and one actinomycete species) and production of volatile compounds (VOCs) in typical building materials in outside walls, separating walls, and bathroom floors at various relative humidities (RHs) of air. Air samples from incubation chambers were adsorbed on Tenax TA and dinitrophenylhydrazine

8. Microbial transformation of kepone.
Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain KO3 and a mixed aerobic enrichment culture, isolated from sewage sludge lagoon water, were found to aerobically transform the chlorinated insecticide Kepone, yielding monohydro-Kepone. Identification of the product was confirmed by gas chromatography and electron impact mass spectrometry. The mixed culture and P. aeruginosa stra

9. Carbon Dioxide Effects on Glucose Catabolism by Mixed Microbial Cultures1
Results have shown that, with mixed culture (sewage) inocula, the lag period in aerobic catabolism of glucose can be reduced by increased CO2 tension. Conversely, removal of CO2 from the air supply to the growth flasks and Warburg vessels may increase the lag period.

10. Microbial Degradation of the Sulfonate of Dodecyl Benzene Sulfonate
It has been observed that the sulfonate portion of alkyl benzene sulfonate (ABS) will undergo microbial attack in certain pure and mixed cultures if an energy source, such as glucose, is available. The evidence for this is provided by the stoichiometric relationship between the reduction of ABS concentration and the appearance of inorganic sulfur compounds.

11. Absence of microbial mineralization of lignin in anaerobic enrichment cultures.
The existence of anaerobic biodegradation of lignin was examined in mixed microflora. Egyptian soil samples, in which rapid mineralization of organic matter takes place in the presence of an important anaerobic microflora, were used to obtain the anaerobic enrichment cultures for this study. Specifically, 14CO2 or [14C]lignin wood was used to investigate the

12. Microbial Dissimilatory Sulfur Cycle in Acid Mine Water
Ferric, sulfate, and hydrogen ions are produced from pyritic minerals associated with coal as a result of autotrophic bacterial metabolism. Water carrying these ions accumulated behind a porous dam composed of wood dust originating at a log-cutting mill. As water seeped through the porous dam, it was enriched in organic nutrients which then supported growth
