13. Assessing the sources of high fecal coliform levels at an urban tropical beach
Recreational water quality is commonly assessed by microbial indicators such as fecal coliforms. Maceió is the capital of Alagoas state, located in tropical northeastern Brazil. Its beaches are considered as the most beautiful urban beaches in the country. Jatiúca Beach in Maceió was found to be unsuitable for bathing continuously during the year of 2011.

14. Reclamation status of a degraded pasture based on soil health indicators
Pasture degradation is a concern, especially in susceptible sandy soils for which strategies to recover them must be developed. Microbiological and biochemical soil health indicators are useful in the guindace of soil management practices and sustainable soil use. We assessed the success of threePanicum maximum Jacq. cultivars in the reclamation of a pasture

15. Evaluation of Petrifilm™ system compared with traditional methodology in count of indicators of sanitary-hygienic quality and pathogenic microorganisms in sheep milk
The objective of this study was to evaluate the applicability of the Petrifilm™ plates to enumerate microbial groups in sheep milk. Samples of sheep milk (n = 30) were plated simultaneously, to enumerate mesophilic aerobes, total coliforms, lactic acid bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, using convencional reference protocols and Petrifil

16. In Vitro antimicrobial photoinactivation with methylene blue in different microorganisms
AIM: To evaluate the in vitro antimicrobial effects of photodynamic therapy (PDT). METHODS: The microorganism indicators were: Candida albicans, Pseudomonas aeruginosa,Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus. A microbial pool was prepared (10 8 cells/mL), from which aliquots were transferred to culture plates for carrying out the PDT using methy

17. Yeasts and hygienic-sanitary microbial indicators in water buffalo mozzarella produced and commercialized in Minas Gerais, Brazil
The aim of this work was to study the yeast populations and the main hygienic-sanitary microbial indicators in water buffalo mozzarella produced and commercialized in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Forty-two water buffalo mozzarella samples were purchased from retail outlets in Belo Horizonte. In addition, five samples of consecutive starter cultures, curd before aci

18. Soil health: looking for suitable indicators. What should be considered to assess the effects of use and management on soil health?
Soil Health refers to the ecological equilibrium and the functionality of a soil and its capacity to maintain a well balanced ecosystem with high biodiversity above and below surface, and productivity. To understand and use soil health as a tool for sustainability, physical, chemical, and biological properties must be employed to verify which respond to the

19. Desenvolvimento de um sistema de recirculação com uso de wetlands construídas para efluentes da piscicultura / Development of a recirculating system using constructed wetlands for aquaculture effluents
Global aquaculture has been growing very fast in recent decades due to several factors, including: population growth, demand for low calorie protein and especially the reduction of natural fish stocks. Brazil has enormous potential to become a world leader in fisheries production in captivity. However, the development of aquaculture in Brazil must be conduct

20. Decomposição de resíduos da colheita e transferência de carbono para o solo em plantações de eucalipto / Harvest residue decomposition and carbon transference to the soil in eucalypt plantations
In Brazil, eucalyptus is planted in regions with different climate and soil conditions, which affect harvest residue decomposition and the rate of carbon transference fromresidues (Cres) to the soil, hence influencing soil organic matter (SOM) content. SOM is considered one of the most important indicators of soil quality and forest production sustainability

21. Bacterioplankton features and its relations with doc characteristics and other limnological variables in Paraná river floodplain environments (PR/MS-Brazil)
Since the introduction of the Microbial Loop concept, many studies aimed to explain the role of bacterioplankton and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in aquatic ecosystems. Paraná River floodplain system is a very complex environment where these subjects were little explored. The aim of this work was to characterize bacterial community in terms of density, bi

23. Biomassa microbiana do solo.
ABSTRACT: The microbial biomass, respiration and their derivative indexes are proposed as indicators of the state and changes of the soil organic matter. This document presents basic information about these indicators and the two methodologies most used for C-microbial biomass determinations, the fumigation-incubation and the fumigation-extraction methods. 24. Uso de parâmetros microbiológicos como indicadores para avaliar a qualidade do solo e a sustentabilidade dos agroecossistemas.
ABSTRACT: Every factor that has a negative impact on soil microorganisms sooner or later will reflect in a deterioration of soil chemical and physical properties specially, those related to soil organic matter losses. This paper was based on a talk presented at "The International Symposium of Indicators of Soil Quality" held on Marco Juarez-Argentina. Some o
