1. Population Changes of Eubacteria, Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria and Methanogenic Archaea in an Anaerobic Reactor Processing Ethanol Distillery Vinasse
Abstract The microbiological characterization by molecular techniques (DGGE and quantitative PCR) of Archaea, Bacteria domain and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) from a laboratory scale Up-flow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) processing sugar cane vinasse was performed during the operational phase with increasing organic loads. The organic load removal effic

2. Influence of co-substrates in the anaerobic degradation of an anionic surfactant
The removal of linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS) was evaluated in a UASB reactor using short-chain alcohols (ethanol and methanol) and complex co-substrate (yeast extract). Using only methanol and ethanol as co-substrates resulted in removal of LAS between 30 and 41%. At the end, addition of a complex substrate (yeast extract) increased the removal of LAS

3. Diversity and three-dimensional structures of the alpha Mcr of the methanogenic Archaea from the anoxic region of Tucuruí Lake, in Eastern Brazilian Amazonia
Methanogenic archaeans are organisms of considerable ecological and biotechnological interest that produce methane through a restricted metabolic pathway, which culminates in the reaction catalyzed by the Methyl-coenzyme M reductase (Mcr) enzyme, and results in the release of methane. Using a metagenomic approach, the gene of the a subunit of mcr (mcrα) was

4. Methanogenic potential and microbial community of anaerobic batch reactors at different ethylamine/sulfate ratios
Methylamine and sulfate are compounds commonly found in wastewaters. This study aimed to determine the methanogenic potential of anaerobic reactors containing these compounds and to correlate it with their microbial communities. Batch experiments were performed at different methylamine/sulfate ratios of 0.71, 1.26 and 2.18 (with respect to mass concentration

5. Molecular identification of methanogenic archaea from Surti buffaloes (bubalus bubalis), reveals more hydrogenotrophic methanogens phylotypes
Methane emissions from ruminant livestock are considered to be one of the more potent forms of greenhouses gases contributing to global warming. Many strategies to reduce emissions are targeting the methanogens that inhabit the rumen, but such an approach can only be successful if it targets all the major groups of ruminant methanogens. Therefore, a thorough

6. Molecular diversity of Archaea in Amazonian River sediments and characterization of cultured methanogenic species. / Diversidade molecular de arqueias em sedimentos de rios da Amazônia e caracterização de espécies metanogênicas cultivadas.
High positive fluxes of methane to the atmosphere have been detected in the Amazonian region. Methane is the second most important greenhouse gas and microorganisms belonging to the Archaea domain are responsible for approximately 70% of the total methane emitted to the atmosphere annually. The objective of this work was to characterize the Archaea diversity

In this work, the mesophilic anaerobic degradation (35 C) of the sugar cane vinasse was studied in an anaerobic fluidized bed reactor (RALF) for 255 days. The reactor, built in acrylic and with a total volume of 4,192 cm3, was filled with polystyrene particles as a means support, occupying 70 % of the total volume, and operated with hydraulic retention time

9. Influência do oxigênio no crescimento de arquéias metanogênicas e bactérias redutoras de sulfato em reatores anaeróbios em batelada / Oxygen influence on methanogenic archaea and sulfate reducing bacterias growth in anaerobic batch reactors
This work aimed to evaluate the behavior of methanogenic archaea and sulfate reducing bacteria in the presence of oxygen, using anaerobic batch reactors under sulfidogenic and mesophilic conditions. The reactors were inoculated with anaerobic sludge from UASB reactor treating poultry wastes. Third copies of the reactors were fed with ZINDER medium, increased
