1. ENHANCED REMOVAL OF PERSISTENT CONTAMINANTS AND TOXICITY REDUCTION THROUGH THE APPLICATION OF A TRIPLE-STAGE FENTON PROCESS TO SANITARY LANDFILL LEACHATES FROM YUCATAN, MEXICO
Sanitary landfill leachate (SLL) is a mixture of highly toxic and recalcitrant pollutants that threatens the water quality of the Yucatán Peninsula karst aquifer, one of the most extensive aquifers on the planet. To reduce the adverse environmental impacts of this wastewater, a triple-stage Fenton process (FP) was applied in an old SLL. Removal efficiencies

2. Environmental effects of leachate extracts from reclaimed asphalt pavement: determination of metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and acute toxicity to Daphnia magna
RESUMO Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) has a variety of organic and inorganic compounds that can interact with the environment and promote deleterious effects on human health. This study investigated the potential toxicity of RAP through metal determination, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) analysis and acute toxicity tests with Daphnia magna. Leached

3. Dietary risk assessment of fluoride, lead, chromium, and cadmium through consumption of Tieguanyin tea and white tea
Abstract Food and beverage consumption is the most possible route of human exposure to undesirable elements. Tieguanyin tea and white tea are widely-consumed beverage, which may be contaminated by fluoride (F), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), and cadmium (Cd). For this study, the contamination levels and dietary exposure risks of these elements were studied from 7

4. Adsorption of Calcium(II), Cadmium(II) and Copper(II) Ions from Water by Prepared Silicon-Aluminum-Zirconium Oxide Using Sol-Gel Process
Ternary oxide silica-alumina-zirconia (SiO2/Al2O3/ZrO2) obtained by the sol-gel process was applied as novel adsorbent of ions in aqueous solution. Batch isotherms were performed using standard CuII, CdII and CaII solutions at variable pH and different concentrations. Adsorption capacity was best at weakly acidic pH. The maximum adsorption capacities were 2.

5. Thallium Associated with Manganese Ore Tailings in a Deactivated Mine in the Western Region of Bahia, Brazil
Thallium (Tl) is a rare metal with toxic effects notably harmful to human health and the environment. In this article, the natural occurrence of Tl was evaluated in a deactivated manganese mine located in the western region of Bahia, Brazil. The extraction procedure with aqua regia was used to dissolve the soil, sediment, and tailings samples. The Tl content

6. Metal Distribution in the Environmental Compartments of Manguaba Lagoon (Alagoas State, Brazil)
The metal concentrations in water, sediments and mollusks (Tagelus plebeius) of the Manguaba Lagoon and the influence of humic substances from water and sediments in the distribution of these metals were investigated in this work. The mean metal concentrations in water were: Mg (89.0 ± 0.11), Ca (32.0 ± 0.10), Fe (0.97 ± 0.02), Mn (0.52 ± 0.01), Zn (0.33

7. Photoluminescent Investigation of the Doping Site of Eu3+-Doped [Zn3(BTC)2·12H2O] Metal-Organic Framework Prepared by Microwave-Assisted Hydrothermal Synthesis
The [Zn3(BTC)2·12H2O] (BTC = 1,3,5-tricarboxylate) metal-organic framework (MOF) was successfully synthesized using a microwave-assisted hydrothermal synthesis technique, which allowed for significantly decreased reaction time compared to the production of the same compound via conventional heating. In situ doping with Eu3+ ions at concentrations ranging fr

8. Concentration of Metals in Plant Litter Produced in Regions of Caatinga in Southwest Bahia, Brazil
Plant litter has several functions in a forest ecosystem. Studies about plant litter are of great importance to better understand and conserve ecological environments. The objective of this study was to investigate the concentration of metals (Fe, Co, Ca, Cu, Ni, Mg, Mn and Zn) in Caatinga plant litter in the southwest region of Bahia. Plant litter was colle

9. Minieditorial: Risco de FA após Ablação de Flutter Dependente de Istmo Cavo-Tricuspídeo: Vale a Pena Fazer a Ablação da FA Simultaneamente?
Considering the size of the Amazon region and the need for studies to establish soil trace metal concentrations in natural environments, the objective of this work was to evaluate heavy metal contents in a toposequence of an Amazon State microbasin. Soil samples were collected in three native forest topographic positions. Samples were opened for analysis by

11. Spatial and Temporal Effects of Decommissioning a Zinc Smelter on the Sediment Quality of an Estuary System: Sepetiba Bay, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Sepetiba Bay, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was home to a zinc smelter until its shutdown in 1998, and during 2011 the remains of the smelter were decommissioned. This study investigates the impact of decommissioning on metal concentrations in the bottom sediments of the bay. In addition to Zn and Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni and Pb are also quantified. The results show that ov
