1. Efecto inhibidor del dióxido de germanio sobre el biofouling del puerto de Mar del Plata
ABSTRACT Marine biofouling on any new material immersed in seawater can lead to extra costs due to increased maintenance, or/and even mechanical wear, and/or biodeterioration that require costly antifouling measures. Fouling organisms growing on immersed manmade surfaces affect hulls, piers, buoys, aquaculture and pipes mainly. Following adsorption of a cond

2. Brazilian Bioluminescent Beetles: Reflections on Catching Glimpses of Light in the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado
ABSTRACT Bioluminescence - visible and cold light emission by living organisms - is a worldwide phenomenon, reported in terrestrial and marine environments since ancient times. Light emission from microorganisms, fungi, plants and animals may have arisen as an evolutionary response against oxygen toxicity and was appropriated for sexual attraction, predation

3. Paleoenvironmental evolution of the coastal plain of Southern Brazil: palynological data from a Holocene core in Santa Catarina State
ABSTRACT This paper presents a paleoenvironmental reconstruction from palynological analyses of a sedimentary core of Holocene age, drilled at municipality of Garopaba (Santa Catarina), Southern Brazil. A total of 46 samples was collected for palynological analyses in the 450 cm-long core PCSC-3, as also three samples for radiocarbon dating and granulometric

4. First Asymmetric Reduction of Isatin by Marine-Derived Fungi
In this study, whole cells of marine-derived fungi were used to reduce isatin (1H-indole-2,3-dione) to dioxindole (3-hydroxyindolin-2-one) for 7 days at 32 °C. The screening showed that several strains could reduce isatin and produce the enantioenriched dioxindole. The best conversions were obtained by Cladosporium sp. CBMAI 1237 and Westerdykella sp. CBMAI

5. Penicillosides A and B: new cerebrosides from the marine-derived fungus Penicillium species
Abstract In the course of our ongoing effort to identify bioactive compounds from marine-derived fungi, the marine fungus, Penicillium species was isolated from the Red Sea tunicate, Didemnum species. Two new cerebrosides, penicillosides A and B were isolated from the marine-derived fungus, Penicillium species using different chromatographic methods. Their s

6. Antibacterial, antifungal and cytotoxic activities exhibited by endophytic fungi from the Brazilian marine red alga Bostrychia tenella (Ceramiales)
Abstract Marine environment is one of the most important sources regarding natural products research. Besides, marine microorganisms have been denominated as a talented natural source for discovery of new leads. Although the association of macroalgae and fungi has been described regarding ecological issues, there is a lack of studies about marine seaweed end

7. Caracterização da diversidade de fungos filamentosos associados a esponjas marinhas e avaliação da produção de lacase = : Diversity of filamentous fungi associated with marine sponges and evaluation of laccase production / Diversity of filamentous fungi associated with marine sponges and evaluation of laccase production
The ocean represents a promissing habitat in the search for new microorganisms, which may have the ability to produce enzymes of industrial interests different from that produced by their terrestrial counterparts. In this context, two samples of the marine sponge Dragmacidon reticulatum were collected on northern coast of São Paulo State, aiming at the char

9. Marine natural products: chemical and biological potential of seaweeds and their endophytic fungi
Marine natural products have currently been recognized as the most promising source of bioactive substances for drug discovery research. In this review, extraordinary metabolites from marine algae species are illustrated, as well as approaches for their isolation and determination of their biological properties and pharmaceutical potential. Furthermore, mari

10. Diterpenes from marine brown alga Dictyota guineensis (Dictyotaceae, Phaeophyceae)
The crude extract of the marine brown alga Dictyota guineensis was analyzed by high-resolution gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HRGC-MS). Five diterpenes were identified: dictyol E (the most abundant diterpene), dictyotadiol, dictyoxide, isopachydictyol A and pachydictyol A, all diterpenes from the chemical group I, i.e., mainly prenylated derivatives o

Isolamento, investigação química e avaliação do potencial antibiótico, antibiofilme e anti-trichomonas vaginalis de fungos associados a organismos marinhos da costa sul do Brasil / Isolation, chemical investigation and evaluation of antibiotic, antibiofilm and anti-Trichomonas vaginalisactivities of fungi associated to marine organisms from south brazilian coast
Fungi isolated from marine organisms attract the interest of many researchers around the world, since they produce differentiated secondary metabolites due to the environmental conditions to which these organisms are subjected. Several biological activities have been reported for these compounds, mainly as antitumoral, antibacterial and, antiprotozoal. The i

12. Isolation and cultivation of fungal strains from in vitro cell cultures of two marine sponges (Porifera: Halichondrida and Haplosclerida)
Despite the large number of reports describing sponge-microbe associations, limited knowledge is available about associated fungi and their relationships with the hosts. In this work, specific fungal strains were obtained directly from in vitro sponge cell cultures (primmorphs) and single sponge cells (cytospins) and compared with those obtained from whole t
