1. Multiple cavitary lung lesions on CT: imaging findings to differentiate between malignant and benign etiologies

2. High-resolution computed tomography findings in young infants with cystic fibrosis detected by newborn screening
OBJECTIVE: High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) allows the early detection of pathological changes in the lung structure, and reproducible scoring systems can be used to quantify chest computed tomography (CT) findings in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). The aim of the study was to describe early HRCT findings according to a validated scoring syste

3. Improving CT-guided transthoracic biopsy of mediastinal lesions by diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the preliminary results obtained using diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging and the apparent diffusion coefficient for planning computed tomography-guided biopsies of selected mediastinal lesions. METHODS: Eight patients with mediastinal lesions suspicious for malignancy were referred for computed tomography-guided biopsy.

4. Estudo etiológico e patológico de pneumonias em javalis criados de forma confinada no estado do Rio Grande do Sul / Etiological and pathological study of pneumonia in captive wild-boars in the state of Rio Grande do Sul

Objective: To review the literature, verifying the role of high resolution computed tomography of the chest in the monitoring of children and adolescents with cystic fibrosis. Method: The bibliographic survey was based on information released by the Medline, MD Consult, Highwire, Medscape, LILACS, and direct search of the past 10 years, using the terms cysti

6. Evaluation of the ultrastructure and of the movement of cilia in children with chronic and repetition pneumopathies without a defined diagnosis / Avaliação da ultraestrutura e do movimento ciliar em crianças com pneumopatias crônicas e de repetição se diagnóstico definido
INTRODUCTION: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a genetic disorder of the ultrastructure and function of mobile cilia, with consequent impairment of mucociliary clearance, leading to upper and lower airways respiratory infection and infertility. The diagnosis, based on ultrastructure evaluation or genetic scan, is performed according to patient selection a

7. Effect of Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis on the Pulmonary Defense Mechanisms of Guinea Pig Lungs
Many edemagenic and consolidating inflammatory diseases, such as virus pneumonias, of the lung are complicated by bacterial infection. Previous literature has stressed that edema and consolidation may promote bacterial proliferation by interfering with phagocytosis. To test that hypothesis, lung defense mechanisms were studied in guinea pigs with tuberculin-

8. Effect of Chlorite-Oxidized Oxyamylose on Influenza Virus Infection in Mice
Intraperitoneally administered chlorite-oxidized oxyamylose (COAM) provided protection of mice against intranasal infection with several influenza virus strains. Treated animals invariably showed a reduced consolidation of the lungs and, in the case of infection with lethal strains of virus, also a delay in mortality. With a small dose of influenza A/PR8 vir

9. Serum antibody prevents lethal murine influenza pneumonitis but not tracheitis.
This paper reports studies showing the effects of serum antibody upon influenza infection at two different sites: the trachea and lung. Tracheal desquamation, pulmonary consolidation, death, and virus shedding were examined after infection of mice with a lethal A/Port Chalmers/1/73 (H3N2) influenza virus. Immune serum administered intraperitoneally before in

10. Role of T-lymphocyte subsets in recovery from respiratory syncytial virus infection in calves.
The role of T-cell subsets in respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection was investigated by using monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) to selectively deplete gnotobiotic calves of CD4+, CD8+, or WC1+ gamma delta T-cell receptor+ lymphocytes. Injection of these MAbs produced specific reductions of the target cell populations in the circulation and tissues. Ten days

11. In Vivo Influenza Virus-Inhibitory Effects of the Cyclopentane Neuraminidase Inhibitor RWJ-270201
The cyclopentane influenza virus neuraminidase inhibitor RWJ-270201 was evaluated against influenza A/NWS/33 (H1N1), A/Shangdong/09/93 (H3N2), A/Victoria/3/75 (H3N2), and B/Hong Kong/05/72 virus infections in mice. Treatment was by oral gavage twice daily for 5 days beginning 4 h pre-virus exposure. The influenza virus inhibitor oseltamivir was run in parall

12. Lung Bacterial Clearance in Murine Pneumococcal Pneumonia
We studied the bactericidal capacity of the rat lung during the development of pneumococcal pneumonia. Pneumonia was produced in a lower lobe by the intrabronchial instillation of 104Streptococcus pneumoniae cells in buffer. Lung bacterial counts progressively increased, reaching 107 per lung within 48 h, and the increase was associated with localized atelec
