1. STUDY OF PARAMETERS AFFECTING THE COALESCENCE OF DIMETHYL DISULFIDE DROPS IN A MEROX UNIT
Abstract This study focuses on the coalescence of dimethyl disulfide drops with the mother phase at a flat aqueous-organic interface between dimethyl disulfide and different sodium hydroxide solutions. Drop coalescence is an important part of the Merox process for regenerating the solvent. A digital high-frame rate camera was used for recording drops coalesc

2. Biodiesel Synthesis: Influence of Alkaline Catalysts in Methanol-Oil Dispersion
Biodiesel synthesis from soybean oil using methanol and alkaline catalysts occurs in the following two consecutive steps: dispersion of methanol in the oil and methanolysis. The effect of the alkaline catalysts NaOCH3, KOCH3, NaOH, and KOH in the dispersion step at 30-60 ºC and under mechanical stirring at 400 rpm was evaluated. The dispersion step accounts

3. Sericin as compatibilizer in starch/ polyester blown films
Abstract This study investigated the effects of low concentrations of sericin (≤ 1.5 wt%) in starch- poly(butylene-adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) films. The films were produced by blown extrusion and mechanical, barrier and structural properties were determined. Films containing 1.0 and 1.5 wt% sericin showed higher tensile strength (6.41 and 6.59 MPa)

4. Ion specificity in determining physico-chemical properties of drinking water
Abstract Drinking water plays a key role in regulating the daily salt intake, thus potentially affecting (either in positive or in negative direction) the incidence of diet-related pathologies, including nephrolithiasis. Being regarded as wholesome, bottled water is increasingly preferred to tap water. However, its physico-chemical characterization, as repo

5. Production and characterization of a biosurfactant produced by Streptomyces sp. DPUA 1559 isolated from lichens of the Amazon region
Surfactants are amphipathic compounds containing both hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups, capable to lower the surface or interfacial tension. Considering the advantages of the use of biosurfactants produced by microorganisms, the aim of this paper was to develop and characterize a biosurfactant produced by Streptomyces sp. DPUA1559 isolated from lichens of

6. HOW TO FORMULATE A STABLE AND MONODISPERSE WATER-IN-OIL NANOEMULSION CONTAINING PUMPKIN SEED OIL: THE USE OF MULTIOBJECTIVE OPTIMIZATION
Abstract The multiobjective optimization method was applied in order to improve the droplet size distribution and stability of water-in-oil emulsions composed of sunflower and pumpkin seed oils as continuous phase, polyglycerol polyricinoleate as emulsifier, water as dispersed phase and sodium chloride as co-stabilizer (lipophobe). Three composition factors

7. Adsorption Mechanism of Lignosulfonate at the Air/Liquid Interface
Lignosulfonate is a type of natural polymer surfactant. Its capability to reduce the surface tension of aqueous solution depends on its adsorption configuration at the air/liquid interface. The dynamic surface tension, the air/liquid interfacial film properties of lignosulfonate at different solution concentrations, pH values and ionic strengths had been mea

8. Mejoramiento de las propiedades de tensión en WPC de LDPE: HIPS/fibra natural mediante entrecruzamiento con DCP
Straight Retamo Fiber (telinemonspessulana) was mixed in a polymer matrix formed by low density polyethylene (LDPE) and high impact polystyrene (HIPS) in a 70:30 ratio. The natural fiber was subjected to size reduction between 1700 and 850 µm; surface treatment mercerization was performed; the moisture content was 0.17%. The thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA

9. Specific ion effects on the interfacial tension of water/hydrocarbon systems
Specific ion effects - also known as Hofmeister effects - are ubiquitous in several areas of chemistry, chemical engineering and biology. The interfacial tension corresponds to the energy per unit of area at the interface. Thus, the presence of different salts in different concentrations changes the interfacial tension of a system containing an aqueous phase

10. Work of adhesion of dairy products on stainless steel surface
The adhesion of the solids presents in food can difficult the process of surface cleaning and promotes the bacterial adhesion process and can trigger health problems. In our study, we used UHT whole milk, chocolate based milk and infant formula to evaluate the adhesion of Enterobacter sakazakii on stainless steel coupons, and we determine the work of adhesio

11. NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF THE FLOW OF EMULSION THROUGH STRAIGHT AND CONSTRICTED CAPILLARIES / ANÁLISE NUMÉRICA DO ESCOAMENTO DE EMULSÕES ATRAVÉS DE CAPILARES RETOS E CAPILARES COM GARGANTA
Emulsion can be used as a mobility control agent in enhanced oil recovery methods in order to achieve a more efficient sweep of the reservoir. The application of such technique requires full understanding of how emulsions flow in a porous material. The macroscopic flow behavior can be determined based on the pore scale flow, at which emulsions cannot be trea

12. Flooding characteristics in pulsed packed extraction columns
Flooding behavior of a 76.2 mm diameter pulsed packed column has been determined using four different liquid-liquid systems. The effects of pulsation intensity, flow ratio, interfacial tension, and packing geometry on flood point have been investigated. The results showed that the maximum throughput of the column decreases with an increase in pulsation inten
