1. Treatment adherence and level of control in moderate persistent asthma in children and adolescents treated with fluticasone and salmeterol,

ABSTRACT Instrumentation of the airways in critical patients (endotracheal tube or tracheostomy cannula) prevents them from performing their function of humidify and heating the inhaled gas. In addition, the administration of cold and dry medical gases and the high flows that patients experience during invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation generat

3. Factors associated with uncontrolled asthma in Porto Alegre, Brazil
The prevalence of uncontrolled and controlled asthma, and the factors associated with uncontrolled asthma were investigated in a cross-sectional study. Patients aged 11 years with confirmed asthma diagnosis were recruited from the outpatient asthma clinic of Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre, Brazil. Patients were excluded if they had other chronic pulmo

4. O aparato inalação de gases: a colaboração de James Watt (1736-1819) e Dr. Thomas Beddoes (1760-1808) / The apparatus for inhalation of gases: collaboration of James Watt (1736-1819) e Dr. Thomas Beddoes (1760 - 1808)
In this dissertation we approach pneumatic studies, made by James Watt (1736-1819) that led to the construction of a portable apparatus for gas inhalation in collaboration with the medical therapies of Dr.Thomas Beddoes (1760 - 1808). This apparatus was used in the pneumatic project of Dr.Thomas Beddoes, scientific research, the Pneumatic Medical Institution

5. Morning serum cortisol concentrations after 2 mg inhaled beclomethasone dipropionate in normal subjects: effect of a 750 ml spacing device.
Large spacing devices have been shown to provide more selective delivery of an inhaled steroid to the lung but the effect on the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal suppression associated with high dose inhaled corticosteroids has been little studied. The effect of a large spacing device (Volumatic; 750 ml) on suppression of 0900 h cortisol after 2 mg inhaled becl

6. Effect of a volumatic spacer and mouth rinsing on systemic absorption of inhaled corticosteroids from a metered dose inhaler and dry powder inhaler.
BACKGROUND: High doses of inhaled corticosteroids are absorbed systemically and may cause long term side effects. As rinsing the mouth out after use and inhaling through a spacing device may reduce systemic absorption this has been further investigated. METHODS: Three crossover studies were carried out to assess the effect of budesonide given by dry powder i

7. Optimizing inhaled drug delivery in patients with asthma.
Successful management of asthmatic patients depends on achieving adequate delivery of inhaled drugs to the lung. This assumes particular importance for inhaled corticosteroids where the therapeutic goal should be to achieve a high ratio of airway anti-inflammatory efficacy to local and systemic side effects. The availability of user-friendly inhaler devices

8. Delivery of beclomethasone dipropionate from a spacer device: what dose is available for inhalation?
BACKGROUND--It is common for inhaled steroids to be delivered through a large volume spacer device. Comparatively little is known about how this practice affects the dose of drug received by patients compared with drug delivered directly from a metered dose inhaler. METHODS--The amount of beclomethasone dipropionate, contained in particles of various size, a

9. Optimum use of a spacer device.
Nedocromil sodium given by the Fisonair spacer should be inhaled immediately. Multiple actuations into the spacer should be avoided. Delay of 20 seconds before sampling reduced the amount of drug available for inhalation in the respirable range by 81%. Placing two actuations into the spacer reduced the amount of drug available by 47%.

10. Improvement of pressurised aerosol deposition with Nebuhaler spacer device.
The effect on aerosol deposition from a pressurised metered dose inhaler of a 750 cm3 spacer device with a one way inhalation valve (Nebuhaler, Astra Pharmaceuticals) was assessed by means of an in vivo radiotracer technique. Nine patients with obstructive lung disease took part in the study. The pattern of deposition associated with use of a metered dose in

11. Do large volume spacer devices reduce the systemic effects of high dose inhaled corticosteroids?
When used in high doses, inhaled corticosteroids may cause suppression of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis. The influence of the mode of drug inhalation on the degree of this suppression is not clear. Hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal function was assessed by measurement of 0900 h serum cortisol concentrations, a short tetracosactrin test, and 24 hour urin

12. Compliance with inhaled asthma medication in preschool children.
BACKGROUND--Previous studies have shown poor compliance with regular drug therapy in children and adults with asthma. In preschool children the parents supervise and are responsible for drug administration, but little is known of compliance in this group. In addition, there are few data on the patterns of drug use of inhaled prophylactic asthma therapy or of
