2. Responses of riffle beetle assemblages to deforestation in a semi-deciduous Atlantic Forest remnant
Abstract Deforestation affects freshwater assemblages since aquatic organisms are dependent on the structure of the riparian vegetation. To investigate the responses of riffle beetles (Elmidae) to deforestation, this study assessed the structure of riffle beetle assemblages found in streams running through a large and well-preserved semi-deciduous Atlantic F

3. Abundance and Diversity of Soil Macrofauna in Native Forest, Eucalyptus Plantations, Perennial Pasture, Integrated Crop-Livestock, and No-Tillage Cropping
ABSTRACT Intensive land use can affect macrofaunal biodiversity, which is a property that can be used as a soil quality indicator. This study evaluated the abundance and diversity of soil macrofauna and its relation to soil chemical and physical properties in five land use systems (LUS) in the eastern region of Santa Catarina. The following LUS were studied:

4. Genotoxic effect of Phenanthrene on Chironomus sancticaroli (Diptera: Chironomidae)
Phenanthrene, a Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon, remains adsorbed to sedimentary particles in aquatic environments. It affects mainly benthic organisms, and is considered potentially genotoxic. In ecotoxicology, species of Chironomus Meigen, 1803 are widely known as bioindicators of the effects of chemicals on aquatic organisms. This study investigates the e

5. Isolation of bacteriocin - producing lactic acid bacteria from 'Ugba' and 'Okpiye', two locally fermented nigerian food condiments
In this work, 100 samples each of 'ugba' and 'okpiye' were evaluated for the presence of bacteriocin producing lactic acid bacteria. Thirty strains showing antibacterial activity against at least one of the indicator organisms were selected from a total of 752 colonies isolated from the condiments. Out of the 30, only five strains retained activity after the

6. Serrapilheira aplicada como biomonitor na avaliação do bosque urbano do Instituto de Pesquisas Energéticas e Nucleares, São Paulo,SP / Litterfall as biomonitors applied the evaluation of urban forest of the Nuclear and Energy Research Institute, São Paulo, SP
Several processes are considered responsible for ecosystems maintaining. Among them we can highlight mineral cycling that corresponds to the cycle of chemical elements that flow between the biotic compartments, leaves and litterfall, and abiotic, atmosphere and soil. These chemical elements accumulate of the active form through the absorption in the tissues

7. RESÍDUOS DE BIFENILOS POLICLORADOS EM ARROZ E FEIJÃO DO ESTADO DO RIO GRANDE DO SUL / RESIDUES OF POLYCHLORINATED BIPHENYL IN RICE AND BEANS IN THE STATE OF RIO GRANDE DO SUL
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were commercially produced between 1929 and the mid 1980s with industrial purposes. The same properties that interested industrially, as chemical inertness, high dielectric constant, resistance to burning; were also responsible for the spreading of the PCBs in all of the environmental compartments, mainly due to the inadequat

8. Macrolgae as an indicator of the environmental health of the Pirangi reefs, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil
The coral reefs of Pirangi beach have suffered the impact of anthropic actions, mainly those related to tourism. To evaluate these effects, algal samples were collected at nine stations, distributed along the reef fringe. The macrobenthic community (algae/coral) was identified through photographic methods. A total of thirty species of algae, five species of

9. Diversidade de nematóides em agroecossistemas e ecossistemas naturais.
ABSTRACT: In this work, scientific and international literature about nematode diversity is reviewed and discussed. Among multicelular animals, nematodes are the most abundant. They have different feeding habits (plant feeder, fungal feeder, bacterial feeder, predator of animals and omnivore) and many ecological roles in soils. They may be used as soil ecolo

We studied the abundance, richness and composition of hunting ants and their variation in production systems in department of Caquetá-Colombia, 27 farms were selected in three productive systems (agroforestry, silvopastoral and traditional), in this nine kinds of soil uses were identified. The proportions of clean pasture, agroforestry and old stubble contr

11. Dinâmica funcional da comunidade microbiana heterotrófica em lagoa rasa subtropical
Aquatic ecosystems float around trends in which abrupt transitions can occur between persistents regimes, alterning the viability of the resources or the physical and chemical parameters. Following this trend, communities vary in time and space as a result of their interactions with the environment and other organisms. Microbial communities are important com

12. Transporte de nutrientes e bactÃrias por escoamento superficial devido a aplicaÃÃo de Ãgua residuÃria da suinocultura no solo
The swine activity is a characteristic of the south region of Brazil, and in the State of Parana it has been of outstanding economical and social importance. However, this activity presents low environmental quality due to the generation of great volumes of liquid residues with elevated pollutant power due to his physical, chemical and microbiological charac
