1. Numerical model of oil spill as an environmental management method in contingency plan, applied to São Sebastião channel (SP). / Modelagem numérica do comportamento de derrames de óleo como método de gestão ambiental, em planos de contingência, aplicada ao canal de São Sebastião (SP).
The application of numeric models for analysis of oil spill in the coastal environments becomes one of the most important ways to understand the behavior of the oil in this case of impact, giving subsides to the prediction of the displacement of the patches and allowing best efficiency in the control of the extension of the impact agent. These assumptions gi

2. Simulação de escoamentos gás-sólido reativos em leitos fluidizados circulantes / Simulation of reactive gas-solid flows in circulating fluidized beds
Circulating fluidized bed reactors are widely used in large scale applications such as catalytic cracking of petrol and coal combustion. Development and design in those areas are strongly based on demonstration plants, at extremely high costs. In this context, treatments applying computational fluid mechanics assume considerable relevance. The complex gas-so

4. Successful external fertilization in turbulent environments.
Mathematical and experimental simulations predict that external fertilization is unsuccessful in habitats characterized by high water motion. A key assumption of such predictions is that gametes are released in hydrodynamic regimes that quickly dilute gametes. We used fucoid seaweeds to examine whether marine organisms in intertidal and subtidal habitats mig

5. Microfluidics without microfabrication
Microfluidic devices create spatially defined, chemically controlled environments at microscopic dimensions. We demonstrate the formation and control of microscopic hydrodynamic and chemical environments by impinging a low-intensity acoustic oscillation on a cylindrical electrode. The interaction of small-amplitude (≤203 μm), low-frequency (≤515 Hz) flu

6. Simulation of detachment of specifically bound particles from surfaces by shear flow.
The receptor-mediated adhesion of cells to ligand-coated surfaces is important in many physiological and biotechnological processes. Previously, we measured the detachment of antibody-coated spheres from counter-antibody- and protein A-coated substrates using a radial-flow detachment assay and were able to relate mechanical adhesion strength to chemical bind
